This may be a stupid question but why are there two separate and distinct colors for XB's and their crank case? I have seen them in both Black and Metallic. My 2006 FireBolt has a Metallic case, but would look much better in all black. Did Buell do this in certain model years? Is it just a cover, or would I have to totally swap out the case if I wanted it in black?
Thanks...

The 9 is black and the 12 is the metallic. I believe it is supposed to be a magnesium (sp?) look. Other parts on the bike have the same coloring. The dash on the R, chin fairings and some other stuff.

I painted my case and timing covers last night. I'll post up some pics of the bike completed tomorrow.

Does anybody know if the cast is the same between the two? By that I mean is one a smoother cast then the other. I have the black case and am considering going polished. I've polished the swingarm and you would be AMAZED at how rough the casting was unless you had seen it. There was a huge amount of irregularities and 'filler' applied under the powdercoat. Lots of rather large voids. Very dissapointing to see the shoddy construction hidden under that nice layer of bondo and paint. I guess they just figure very few will ever see it, and I assume it's still structurally sound.

Back to the topic at hand. I have a 9 case (black) and would like to polish it. I've seen it on other bikes and looks like it can be done, I'm just curious if the case from a 12 might have fewer voids. The black crinkle powdercoat would be very good as a concealer.

I'd consider trading cases with someone but I'll probably save that project until later so I don't sacrifice too much riding weather.

Alright man there's no need to YELL!!

I would think the magnesium cover would be easier to work with just because the black wrinkle paint would be harder to get off, it would seem. I think the black primary cover looks so much better on the 12's because it matches the frame better. I always wondered why they did this as well...So I swapped them on my 9 and 12....to teach them a lesson!

That sounds like a definite possibility. Right now, I'm in the early stages of a move to TN. It should be complete around early May. Then I've got to train a unit in MS the first two weeks of May. My riding time is very hit-or-miss right now so you can understand I don't feel like tearing down my bike too soon.

Sounds good Leo if you can wait till later this summer.

Hey Buellshiter, post up some pics. Did you have any problems doing it? Any tips? I've polished the subframe rails, tail, rearsets and a swingarm that I haven't installed yet... I think I'm getting the hang of it now but the swingarm SUCKED.

The only problem I ran into was rushing pulling the cam cover off and pulled 2 cams out ,which then ment I had to pull the rocker boxes off, other than that it was fine just follow the manual

Looks good

Almost done putting it back together and will put up pics when done

I painted my primary black, all the small trim pieces are a black metallic (Shifter parts, and inspection covers), all in all I think it looks pretty good, on the other side I didn't feel like removing the cam cover, so I made a new medallion and painted it the black metallic...
