I changed my rims out this evening with Saintly and rushed home to put them on. All went well, buttoned the bike back up and thought I was done.
When doing the final check I noticed that when the rear wheel is turned forward it walks of the rear pulley about 1/4inch. When turned backwards it goes back on the rear pulley but then walk off the front one until it actuall rubs against the motor.
I have tried to redo it several times including pulling the belt tensioner pulley and still keep having the same problem. Can someone PLEASE help with some suggestions as to what to look for next?
The bike has been down since November and I was so excited about riding this weekend but it ain't lookin' like it is going to happen

Is your swingarm straight?
Are the pulleys okay?
When you lay the rim flat on the pulley, is the pulley warped?
Have you put all the bolts back in the brace for the swingarm?

Glitch,
Thanks for the reply!
I will elaborate a bit to hopefully see if ya'll can come up with something.
The bike is an 06' Firebolt with only 1400 miles on it so all the pulleys and belt are in what appears to be great shape. In addition it was fine prior to the wheel swap.
On Monday evening I put her up on the Pit bulls and pulled the rear tire by following the manuals recommendations. I did not remove the brace but rather gently moved the belt to the side while pulling out the wheel. The brace was not loosened or removed.
I have assembled and reassembled a total of 3 times with the same results. If the tire is moving in a forward direction it will move over to the right approximately 1/8inch on the rear yet stay against the lip on the front. If moved backwards the belt will move back over to the lip on the rear and move towards the motor on the front (once again about 1/8in). Almost seems like the rear pulley needs to be shimmed out a bit to make it run straight.
I have thought about going on a VERY SLOW AND SHORT ride to see if it will somehow straighten itself out with the weight of a rider on it but am scared of damaging something.
The rims I traded for are from an 07' but I don't think that should make a difference.
Any and all input is greatly appreciated!!

I am not sure about backwards, but since new my 06 has always had a slight gap on the rear pulley between the raised inner lip and the belt. if I had to guess about 1/6 to 1/8th of an inch. and the teeth on the belt ever so slightly over hang on the outside. As long as the belt does not keep moving and finds a neutral spot it should be fine. I think you are just experiencing a variation in tolerances between the two rims

This happened to me once doing a race kit on D3r3ks bike.

I took it for a test ride and the belt re-alligned itself...

BUT

One quick question.

Did you reinstall the rear pulley?
If so when you tightened the bolts did you use a cross pettern or did you go in a circular pattern?

If you did not use the criss cross pattern when you tightened the bolts you may have made the pully "pull" up on one side...

I went over to see this for myself after a long night at work so maybe I can shed some light on the install.

Spidey, the pulley was installed using a star pattern to torque the new bolts into place. All new hardware lovingly installed using a torque wrench and Buells exact guidelines. This guys bike is the picture of perfection without exaggeration. NUTS

I'd take it for a slow ride around the block and see if everything aligns itself.

We put the bike up on the Pitbull stand and let it idle in 1st gear with no change. Luvthemtorts is NOT a Badweatherbiker, and it is raining here. He'll have to wait until tomorrow. I know he's having nightmares about this, having been awake all night anticipating the bikes new rollers. Thanks for the replies. NUTS

All belts will move in and out when the bike is either backed up or pushed forward,

Buells, Harleys and the metric bikes as long as it is just the amount you are saying need not to worry....

Luvthemtorts,
I hope the short/slow ride will solve your problem. I think belts develop wear/stretch patterns in the first few hundred miles. Maybe it just needs to be "broken in" (again?) to allow for the diff. tolerances in the wheels.

Please do post pics after this is sorted out...you too Saintly.

Thanks gentlemen!
The input eases my mind a bit. I will admit to being a perfectionist but on this particular issue I was more worried about the safety than anything else.
Since others have experienced the same thing I am going to try it out to see what happens.
I'll let ya'll know how it goes and what the outcome is.

Welp,
The ride didn't result in the belt going back against the pulley lip but it also didn't cause it to get any worse.
After going slowly for several miles I decided I might as well let it rip so I hit the local twisty mountain and it performed very well indeed.
There seems to be no clearance issues or rubbing of any kind plus my mentor says his did the same thing after a pulley change. I'll continue to keep an eye on it but am satisfied that it is safe to ride.
Thanks again for the input!
