Okay guys, needless to say but Im new here, but as Im getting closer to a purchase Ive been thinking about a few things. Im just wondering how much difference there would be between a XB9 with a race kit compared to stock XB12?

I kmow stock theres a 11 HP difference and 14 ft lbs. Or is it how the saying goes,
theres no substitute for displacement?

Thanks

I took the nine + rice kit over a 12 for the same money. Suited me coming off a GSXR750 to carry a few revs.

Right now it looks like the 9 is running almost $1500 less than the 12!

I'd go with the 9

If it is all about the HP& TQ, why buy a Buell? Their are much better choices out there. But if you want a Buell for other obvious reasons, my choice of motor is the 9(I have both) I think it is much better suited for a sportbike. It's smoother, doesn't have a pinging problem and I think will hold up better in the long run. And there are other better qualities too, but I'm probably going to get flamed for just saying this much. This just my opinon and many will disagree.....Charlie

Honestly, They both have there strong points.

I have both a race kitted 9s and a stock 12s.

The 9 is my choice for a daily commuter. Smooth, crisp, and a little rev monster(for a twin). Also very fun to just plain out pilot most other riders in traffic, flickable Buelligan you know.

The 12 on the other hand is my freeway runner, big cubes, TORQUE, and long legs so to speak, very well suited to cruising at 80+.

Pure fun factor puts me on the 9. I really like the power the 9 delivers. The 9 also runs cooler on hot days.
The 12 is a kick but gets to be a little warm in 75+ weather, the fan is constant.

My 04 12S has 570 miles on the ticker.
The 03 9S has 7000. Can you tell I like the 9. : ): )
Just for giggles. I am 5'9" and weigh 155. Might give you a better idea why I like the 9 so much.

Reality... I NEED both. Each has it's own soul, personality, quarks, etc. I can't imagine having only one. : )

Thanks guys, those are some great articles kinda long to read at work but I managed. I think Id be happy with either one. It seems like you can get a great deal on a used 9. I have 2 2003 9s Im gonna check out.

Thanks again

If you look at qtr mile times between the two they are really close to each other. It really comes down to how you like to ride. I own a 9 and like it very much.

I have the 9SX & am just about to trade for a 12scg ,
I commmute into the city on my 9 & its great but a few weeks back I took an scg out for a test ride & it felt waaaaay better - the lower center really suits my size 5ft8" & I felt the power just right - the 9sx on a the motorway feels just a tad slow - the 12 feels perfect ..(for me)
With race kit - it can only get better on both machines.
I really don't get how some riders have both & prefer the 9s - to me the difference is big - the 12 had more control becuase of the handlebars & lower frame & more power to accerlerate thru tight closing gaps.

You should just go test ride both & come back & post your conclusion here - im curious.

BTW , I originally went for the 9sx because of price & the cheaper insurance but since then - insurance is now a low fixed rate thru HD & Im getting a fair deal on my city x so its 12 scg for me.

The City X 9 used have a different gear ratio for the 2006 model vs the xb12, the lower end gearing for riding on the dirt is better than the twelve. I do have the race pipe on it, and the only time that a twelve will pull away from me is on the straits down the highway in the 100+ margin. I really dont get to ride there too often :P . If I could do it all over again, I would have gotten the XB12Stt, (for the bigger tank, tall ground clearance, displacement and HP) but then that bike wasnt available.

I have a 12S with a race kit. I love it. Compared with the 9, Well I tried both coming from a V-Max and bought the 12. I think it is more of what makes the bikes so fun and that is the low end torque. I put a little over 7000 miles on mine last year. It does ok on the highway but rules in the canyons here in Colorado. How completely true about the hp thing. If that is a true concern, buy something else, but the torque. Well ask the guys on the GSXR 600s I completely lost in my CRG's last weekend, they were dropping gears and I was rolling into the band.

Red ones are fast too!

Good luck and welcome, there is no bad choice in the Buell line up except possibly a Blast.
