My XB12S is brand new, barely 4K miles on it. At low RPM (Below 2K) the engine light comes on? It goes right back off after accelerating above 2000 RPM and there don't seem to be any obvious problems with the performance, or cooling?
I know 6 months ago, after I installed my Race ECM & took it in for the TPS reset, the Tech was telling me it was "throwing all kinds of codes." Not sure if he never straightened it out, or I may have gotten a bad ECM from Al, or something?
Anyone got any ideas?

My bike was throwing every code there was(bank angle, fuel pressure, oil pressure temp.).It traced back to a pinched wire below starter that fed .5 volt to all sensors. It's not enough current to blew any fuses just screws up ecm performance. hope this helps

Liquorbox:

I'm not sure why yours is showing an error code, but if you read this thread it will show you how to read them by jumping the data link with a small copper wire, as described in the Service Manual. Could help you narrow the problem down. : )

Thanks guys! The pinched wire theory sounds good. I run an escort 8500 radar detector with a direct wire going to speakers in my helmet. Lately (About the same time the light started!) I've been getting intermittent crackling static in the speakers.
I originally attributed it to a poor plug contact, as I live at the beach with a lot of salt & sand, but I'll check it out, and thanks again!

Fpresky, Was that a pinched wire under the "Starter", or did you misspell "Stator"?
Just curious and want to try and narrow this down as much as possible, as electrical is NOT my forte!
Thanks again.

it was under the starter motor , not stator.there is a .5 volt fed wire that runs below starter to all sensors.

also check the main harness going by the battery terminal, Mine would flash the check engine light on some occasions. Turned out to be a wire that got rubbed through all the tape and plastic coating. very tiny spot tho. the only way I noticed it was in direct sunlight and I got a reflextion from the exposed copper wire.

Liquorbox, you might check your battery voltage. With your radar and speakers, if you have weak battery it may not be able to support all that below 2K. I know that when I had a weak battery the engine light came on when it wasn't making enough voltage. Rev it up and it would go away.

With the bike completely off the battery should read ~12V. With bike running at idle is should read around 14V. When you rev it it should go slightly above that. All this would be without the "accessories".

Fpresky, I'm sorry to be such a pain, but any chance you could give some more details?
Like the color of this .5 volt wire?
Did you have to remove the starter to discover it? Where exactly does it wear?
I'm just trying to shorten my job as much as possible here, since I am a real idiot when it comes to electrical.
Thanks!

Liquor, pull the codes, its simple.

mine threw all kinds of codes, battery was weak. Some months later it went to limp mode and threw the code for the temp sensor, easy replacement.

yes, I had to pull the starter , I spent 3 hours with a multi-meter to track down the short , but like many others have said making sure you have a good battery is the first step. These bikes don't run well on low voltage.Checking the codes will help also. If you are having the same problem I had you will be getting several unrelated codes. Mine were temp, oil pressure, bank angle, fuel pressure , and tps.

Battery's reading a good 12 at rest and 14 when running. I also checked where the main harness comes off the stator, in front of the front pulley, as there seemed to be a little chaffing there, but nothing thru the insulation.
I guess I'm pulling the starter next? Do you remember what color code the offending wire was, or it's placement, relative to the starter? I'm still under warranty and could just take it to the Harley shop, but after previous experiences, I'm reluctant to do that!
Thanks guys.

Bob,

Have you checked to see if you have any trouble codes?

Yes, logic is telling me to take it in!
First thing tomorrow morning, she'll be in the Harley shop. I hate to do it, because I have very little faith in those guys, and they say it's a "3 day turn-around", which probably means I'll be bikeless for at least a week! But, it IS still under warranty, so I shouldn't even stress over it!
