I've noticed the 9's have a black primary cover and the 12's have the gold colored cover. My question is if these are interchangeable between the two? e.g. I have a 12R and would prefer to have a black primary cover. Will a 9 cover fit my bike?

Thanks in advance...

Ah yes, one caveat though.
While the 9s and 12s primary covers are the same. Be sure you're using the same transmission.
We tried using an older 03 primary on an newer 12, since the 12 had the newer transmission the shift shaft was a different size.
The newer transmission shift shaft is larger, so the older primary cover wouldn't fit.
If you went in the other direction it would surely leak at the shift shaft.
I have a 12 primary cover on my 9 with no issues at all, because the 12 cover was off a 12 with the older transmission.
Hope this helps.

Glitch to the rescue!
Thanks for sharing that. That is indeed good to know.
The different transmissions would have never dawned on me.

So covers on 03-05 models (9s and 12s) are interchangeable with each other.
Covers on 06 and up are interchangeable with 06 and up.

That's right, we found out the hard way, so you don't have to...;)

I actually had problems with my '06 12R primary leaking around the shift shaft so I took it off and couldn't really figure out what kind of bushing or whatever that keeps the oil from leaking? It almost looked like it was damaged.

Anyways, I swapped it with my '03 9S and all of a sudden it stopped leaking! It seemed to fit a little better on the 9 anyways? I did, however swap the clutch inspection covers between bikes so that the original covers were on the same bikes and they seemed to leak a little. I know the gaskets should be changed but is there slight differences in shape or size on these inspection covers?

No, the only change is the shift shaft opening. The inspection openings are the same.

The leaking you noticed is related to the little rubber seal that sits on top of the bushing that surrounds the transmission shaft. This is a few cents part.
The RR Primary cover (PC) and the 2006 Model use the same diameter transmission shaft (TS). The previous TS (up to and including 2005) has a diameter of 11.7 mm (1/2 inch). The new one is as far as I can remember a metric diameter which also has a bushing as an insert with a H7 fit (2/100 mm tolerance).
I have had a bronze bushing made for my RR PC to run this with a 2003 XB9 engine base. Let me know if you need the diameters. I will than have a look for it.
