What grit do I need to sand plastics down to get painted? I am sanding it all down to get painted by a shop. Less labor. What grit to start and what grit to finish? I am also doing the tank, the tank is metal. Yes, it is my gixxer, not my Buell. Buell doesn't need work. Its finished. Besides some rash I plan on shavin up with a dremel on the front rim. Other than that, good shape. So, what grit? Thanks guys | ||

Not sure about Gixxer plastics, but I had good success going over my Buell plastics with 1500, then 2000, then using "Gorilla" adhesion promoter, then painting. Hope that helps, 1500 then 2000. | ||

Roger that.. I'll give it a try, was gonna start with 800 on the metal. But plastics I was unsure of. I will get get a variety and see the differences. Hrmm now the question is.. Burnt Orange or Midnight blue.. hrmmmm Suggestions? | ||

Blue, but that's just me. Not much of a "Burnt anything" kind of guy. In reality, I say ask the girls what they like. Isn't that what is truly important?  | ||

Dmextreme, I understand you wanting to save some money but to be honest with you any reputable painter is going to go over it all again regardless. The usually will do most of it with a D A and then by hand in the hard to reach spots. You really aren't saving yourself much. | ||

400 or 600 grit is good enough,1000 and 1500 is used to do final sanding before buffing. | ||

bads is right...not many painters would paint something someone else has prepped...if they do id rethink my choice of painters...sometimes maco will do that but consider the source there....if ur gonna do ur own prep then u might as well lay ur own color cause no painter in his right mind would spray something someone else prepped....buy a semi cheap gun and practice a little then go for it....most of the time we prep with 320 u get into the lighter grits and sometimes the paint wont bond as well....worked fine for my plastics.... |
