Well the gas light came on while riding today so I stopped and filled up(single hose for three grades of gas). Problem is when I put the hose up I noticed the price was showing on the 89 octane section. I know I hit the 91 button but maybe I didnt hit it hard enough or before it was ready.

Question is should I just ride through the tank, drain the gas tank or put in a octane booster? Im in the midwest so the weather has been pretty cool so its not super crazy summer weather yet.

If I need to drain the tank how do I do this? I dont have a service manual as of this so if someone can tell me how or point to a online PDF version or something like that that would be cool. I also searched here but was unable to find anything. OOO its an 06 XB9 City.

Ride it!
The XB engine will realize it's full potential with 91 octane, but with moderate running, your engine using the lower octane gas should be fine.
I was on a trip in Montana last summer and had to use 87 octane as that was all that was available. I occasionally experienced slight pinging and the power was down. I believe the Buell uses a detonation sensor and the Air/Fuel ratio and the timing will adjust to accommodate the lower octane fuel.

You'll be ok. I've run 89 on occasion in my XB9SX. Does just fine.

You'll be fine.......relax!

Don't drain anything.....Just RIDE! If you're still worried then top it off with 91 octane when you get to half a tank. Or, you could let me ride it until the gas light comes on again.....

I have done it twice. But I caught it as soon as I started, so I had to stop, re-swipe the card, and do 91. I put 87 in both of my cars, so its a hard habit to break.

Im not really worried about it, but my old Blast didn't like 87, so I try to stick to just the good stuff with the XB!

No, don't top it off, run it as far out as you can, like about 25 or so miles passed the light coming on. If you mix the gas it will be forever getting the low octane out. It may do no damage, but, it may cause the engine to ping if it's a warmer day.

Yea....take it past 25 miles after the light comes on and when you run out with no gas station in site call Glitch.

I still say RIDE until you need gas again.........

Here is one for you. What if you can only get 87 octane? What do you do then? I heard octane booster kills the 02 sensor, is there a way around this?

Depending on how hard I am riding at the time. I have gotten as low as 17 miles and as high as 32 miles before running out.

I can't.

On my '07 I've run out of gas twice now.
The first time it was 12 miles on the "F trip" meter and the second time it was on 17.

When that light comes on now, I get to a filling station quick!

I certainly feel better about my bike now.
Depending on how hard I ride, the low light will come on as early as 110 miles or as late as 125 miles but I can always get 25-30 miles after the light comes on.

Just throw some octane booster in, no problems... the worst thing that can happen is that it'll ping a little more on acceleration... no huge deal...

My '05 XB9SX has mostly had 87 octane in it since new. It is bone stock though (no exhaust or high flow air filter). I now have 7000 miles on it and I have tried 93 octane gas half a dozen times or so and notice no difference at all in performance or pinging.
