I have a friend looking at a 2003 xb9r race kitted with 2k miles. Mint condition. What is the reliablity of this bike for this year? The asking price is 5k.

Very reliable (some have had issue with the drive belt)........$4000-$4500 would be better .

Good Luck

I hate buying from friends, it's tough to be a hard-nosed negotiator.

Even with the low miles, it is a 3-4 year old bike and if it were me, I'd show up with $4000 cash and see what happens.

The race kit really doesn't affect reliability. It's the throttle hand that affects reliability. Hitting the rev limiter is hard on the engine.

I race an 03 (chain conversion). Yep - check the belt. You will want to upgrade (search all the topics on belts)

At least make sure it has the upgraded belt. Some have had issues with the crank on the 03's but it is a throttle hand accelerated degradation for sure. I got the extended warranty when I bought mine and it was worth every penny and then some.
I had a new shift drum, front isolator, transmission gear set, crank and valve seals replaced under warranty. Also replaced my rear shock and front wheel bearings on my own dime. I do have 26k miles on the bike since April 05. YMMV.

I have really close to 50,000 miles on my bought new XB9S. I had issues with the belt at first, but now that I have the upgraded 03 belt I've not had issues. I wlii be going to the newest belt set up as soon as I can afford it, or if this belt ever breaks. It's got over 20,000 miles on it right now. I love the XB9 motor, it's a ripper.

If you mean going from an 03 to an 04+.
It's more expensive than difficult.
The two pulleys have to be replaced, along with the idle pulley. Replace the 03 belt with the lifetime belt. If you want belt guards, you have to replace them as well. There may be more to it, but not much.

There's a upgraded belt for the 03's that go right on the existing pulleys. Chances are the bike your looking at already has it. You can search here and find the part numbers to make sure. My 03 has 8000 miles on the upgraded 03 belt with no problems. Others here will tell a different story.....but Im good.
