can anyone tell me if it's normal for the fan to run while riding my XB12Ss on the interstate and stay on until the bike is shut off? I thought the fan was only suppose to come on when the bike was shut off, not during riding, or is there something wrong with my bike? it has 2800 miles on it and I run synthetic oil, so what's the deal?

The fan will run whenever a certain temperature is reached, whether the bike is running or not.

It is not unusual for the fan to come on whilst riding. Especially if you have been running at high revs for a while. The fan is designed to run when the motor is switched off. It runs at high speed for 30s and then at a slower speed until the correct cylinder temperature is reached.

That would be standard operating procedure for a Uly. I don't know if other XBs run as often or as constant as a Uly with stock pipe and No right side scoop. I've had one fan replaced under warranty and I expect a second one too if they don't come up with better bearings. I might have to spring for the right side scoop.

Mine is usually on 80% of the time in the summer. Now in the winter it comes on only when traffic slows to a crawl...

the fan is basically unable to cool the engine sufficiently to below the fan cut off point. its anoying but its just the nature of the beast.
I would like to know though how hot is the head temperature during those long rides when the fan dose not ever turn off.
how are the 9s?

If your bike is new it will run more till it is broken in......I added a right side duct to help mine stay cool at highway speeds.

For you new Bueller's, the fan is on a lot of the time on the XBs, more so than most of us like. Break in helps. Synthetic oil helps. But I added a right side airscoop and it reduced the amount of time the fan is on by 80% (my XB12Ss has 7000 miles).

I believe I read somewhere the head temp is 425 degrees F. when the fan comes on.

The more miles you put the less it will run . With over 10K miles my fan runs about half as much as it did when the bike was new ! Even during the hottest part of the summer !Remove the plastic shield on the right side for even more air flow !

I just wonder why a right air scoop is soooo expensive! I would buy one quickly if the price was not crazy like it is now.

Hey Davy, what do you mean "Remove the plastic shield on the right side for even more air flow !" ? I thought that little shield was sort of a scoop, I mean, not like the left side one, but doesn't it work better than removing it? Also, how about those of you who are running the full body kit from Hal's, does it restrict or help airflow to the engine?

Check you oil level as well. Went out on a day ride didn't check the oil before hand..

Fan started running while driving and that never happens on my bike.. Checked out and it was down a quart....

I don't have a reals answer as to why the fan is so loud. I'd reckon it has something to do with cost effectiveness but that's sheer guessing on my part.

When people ask me why it's so loud I tell them it is loud so that I know it's working : )

and key on fan shut off temperature is 356. I wonder if the temperature is like 365 while the fan is staying on.
even with outside air temperature below 70 and moving at 40mph plus the fan will not ever shut off untill one shuts the bike down for a few minutes.

I'm with you, besides... I LOVE how loud my fan is. It ensures that EVERYONE gets to see THE coolest bike in the lot. Not to mention it drowns out the rice rocket jockeys talkin' smack.

My fan ran alot until I did a tps reset. Now it barely runs around town. Dont know why but i like it!

Terribletim from what it seems to me that plastic cover on the right side is more to stop engine heat from constantly flowing on your inner leg while your moving ! I notice more heat from the engine with that piece removed and also noticed that the fan came on less as well . It's just my observation . But I don't buy what some of the guys claim when you remove that plastic cover that it some how fools the sensor into sensing the engine is running cooler ! JMO ............

Ok, I suppose that could be true. It would allow a bit more heat to escape by not covering it up. My dilemma is, I am installing a full body kit. Wonder how much my fan will run with that! And the body kit mounts to the scoop bolts, so I'm not sure I could mount a scoop also.

The small cover on the right is there to provide proper cooling when the bike is STILL.

By removing it you may well cool the eng. temp slightly while moving, but when you stop the fan alone can no longer move the same amount of air at the same velocity.

Nor is the air that does get moved channeled properly over the rear cylinder's cooling fins.

I LOVE the look of the RSS, so I'm going to try to install a "butterfly" of sorts that can be closed at shutoff. Maybe speed sensitive?

As per the Service Manual...

With the key ON, the fan comes on at 428 F and shuts off at 356 F.

With the key OFF, the fan comes on at 338 F and shuts off at 302 F.

If you think your fan is coming on at temps below the 428 F and 338 F respectively, you may need to replace the engine temp sensor located in the center of the rear cylinder head. Remember the ECM is turning the fan on and off when it "thinks" it is between the ranges described above. When the sensor malfunctions, (which they do occationally)the ECM is tricked into turning the fan on and off at inappropriate times.

Y'all just need to get some miles on your bikes.
I've almost 50,000 miles on my XB9S, and the fan only comes on when stuck in traffic.
Only every once in a while does it come on after a ride, unless the weather's hot, and I've been riding hard.
When it does come on, it doesn't stay on for long.

Glitch, your bike has 50K miles!! Damn, and here I was worrying that mine already has 5.5K and is not even a year old...
