Recalled bearings were black, correct? Just picked up a 9R for a race bike and the bearings are black. Should be orange, right? And any dealer that is worth a shit should do the replacement for free? I'll see if I can get them to do it when I get the race tires mounted.
Also, is there not an "upgraded" 03 belt available?
I most likely will do the entire upgrade, but want an extra belt handy for a race or two before the conversion. Thanks.

You're correct about the bearings. I just had mine replaced a 2 months ago. If your dealer is clueless call buell customer service and they will help you out.

That's pretty weird, it's been like a couple years since the bearing gig. I'd start out by calling your favorite dealer, giving them the VIN and finding out if the bike was subject (first of all) to the upgrade and if so (second) if it was actually done.

Buell customer service can help.

Well, the guy I bought the bike from said he knew about the recall, but never had an issue, so he never had anything done.
Was there a time period when the black bearings were not part of a recall? I was under the impression it was all wheel bearing with the black sides do to some catastrophic failures.
Anyone know about the belts?

It's the belt AND the pulleys that need changing.

If you're going to consider swapping out to the new belt and pulleys, and if you're racing, think it's probably time to go chain since you're probably going to be wanting to change gear ratios anyways.

I don't think there was an actual recall on the belt.
They offer a newer/better belt for it but it's still not as good as the 06+ belt or even the 04-05 belt from what I've read here. If you want either of those you need the 04+ pulleys but for a race only bike I think Slaughter has the right idea with the chain conversion.

As far as I can remember it was wheel bearings, side stands on some models and horn wires but I think the horn wire was for the 04 12S. I just can't remember clearly that far back.

Sure, the chain conversion would be great. But then a swingarm with the chain adjusters is needed. I don't think the street version with the stock swing arm and the chain tensioner would work as well on the track as the swingarm meant for racing.
A side stand recall doesn't apply here as the stand needs to be removed.
The horn recall was on the 04 12S. I had one.
Thanks for the torque spec reminder. I forgot about that one.
I know the upgrade to the newer belts requires changing the front and rear pulleys. Also the belt guards. Helped a friend on his Wifes bike.
I thought I heard they came out with a better belt, which still wasn't as good as the new ones, as a replacement for the 03 belts. I could be wrong though.

And weren't ALL bearings with the black sides subject of a "recall" and needed to be changed?

BTW, I appreciate all the help and ideas.

1. As mentioned above, the black bearings need to be changed out for the orange. Not a "recall" per se. The official Buell terminology is "safety upgrade". It's free.
2. The newer belt for the 03 is better, but some riders are still reporting trouble.
3. One of our members, Saintly, sells a chain conversion that cost LESS than upgrading to the 04 belt. Works fine for racing.
4. You don't need the longer competition swing arms for racing, but they are nice, as they also add stability at speed. Hal's makes one for $2500 for the whole kit, Racingmotorcycles.com has a similar unit for $1200.
5. Grandstanddesigns.com has a very nice eccentric chain adjuster that works with the stock swing arm and provides continuous adjustment, - it comes as part of their excellent chain conversion.
6. Another overlooked advantage of the chain conversion is the ease of changing tires, which racers do rather often. Bit of an ordeal with any belt set up.
