What would be really cool would a functional gas gauge in the cluster instead of just the idiot light. My Honda ATV has one, I dont see the technology barrier to put one of these on the bike, esp for running off pavement in rural areas... it would be nice to know how far out I would have to hike if I didnt strap on the jerry cans.

Chad, the template you can download. I'll look for the link this morning and post it here.
Print on transparency film (overhead projector stuff), then you "erase" the face of your speedo, with very fine sand paper, and use the custom one on top of that. Be very careful lifting the needles!
Cycle, way back when the XB was new, (no XB12 yet) H-D came out with their financial report, it stated that Buell was 3% of the profit. We kidded on line about being a 3%er (reference 1%er), I made some patches and Buellers in general were 3%ers. When I finally got my dealership to start a BRAG club, we became the 3% BRAGging Rights Club. The rest is history.

Yep, they pop straight up.
Be careful I broke one when I was taking one apart. Luckily it was from a broken gauge so it didn't matter.

I've been using Photoshop CS2, doing the same as you except for posting, I've been using the "Save for Web" that saves as a .gif.

Would some matte finish photo paper work as a good print medium?

Thanks for the tip on the clock needles.

Also, I took mine apart recently to install the photocell for my PathBlazer and discovered that you can't wipe the inside of the cover. There's a very fragile film covering that is easily destroyed if you mess with it. Luckily I didn't mess mine up too bad, but was definitely headed that way with my intention to spray some glass cleaner on it and go to town on it with a cotton cloth. Evidently it's best to work clean and don't touch the inside of the cover at all.

Glitch, i misspoke before, i was running out the door when i posted regarding resolution.. . all designs i've created so far have been vector art printed at 1440dpi. edited post above.

i've only created dummies so far for proofing, which is what i posted in the install pics. i have UV safe inks, 2880dpi capability, etc. but any media or ink i have tested for my Epson 1280 just wont hold up over time. not to mention the back-lighting issues.

yup, silk screen it is. but you're right, you could just keep poppin' out new designs knowing they're temporary.

i just haven't been happy with the overall quality/durability no matter what ink/media combo i try. not to mention the Xacto work being a TOTAL drag ;)

147db uses some cool, ultra thin film. not sure what kind of durability he's getting. same ink-jet issues i would assume though.

i'm shooting for OEM quality material and ink

Well I have access to an HP Laserjet 5500, I'll use a transparency film and see how that goes. Fortunately I have a spare face in case I feel the need to go back to stock.

the 5500 is a great machine, we had one in the office too, i should have taken it ;)

curious if banding is an issue for you with the heavy black though. ours never liked solid fields of color.

I have access to others as well, that's just the one closest to my office. We have some newer ones. I may just have to go down to Marketing and see what they have down there. I hate to though, they're kinda stuck on themselves and aren't always willing to help, especially since this doesn't have a Coca-Cola logo on it...

My office used to be on the Marketing floor, all the neat stuff they have is unreal!
One of the "workshops" they have is to die for.

I have friend that works at ISSPRO. They make custom guages and face plates. If you send your design to him he can give you a quote using the actual media and screening methods for a long life product.

He has done some cool stuff on the Norton bike in the past. Last time I talked with him they had a quantity minimum of 10 ($75).

Glitch, you might want to try a non-glare UV laminate over your print for durability.

You can also try a local sign shop with full color output machine that prints on vinyl. Typical 3-5 year outdoor durability on that stuff, they can cut it to shape, and should be under $25.

Since you have to sand off the stock gauge background, that means there is no going back huh??

Is it just a white piece of plastic with printing on it? If you sand away the stock image, are you basically dealing with a white backlit backgroud? Meaning anything that is "white" on your transparency is going to be lit up.

I've got lots of good ideas in my head, but not knowing how they'll look when backlit is the kicker. Since there is no going back, you have to make sure you get it right.

How hard is it to get the bezel off the gauges?

I have a back up plan just in case this goes wrong. I have an extra gage face.
They're really easy to take apart.
Be very careful with the needles!
