I filled my Uly yesterday and actually over filled it. No biggie, I thought as I was putting the cap on and went to pay. When I came out, I saw the expected puddle under the bike from the overflow drain but what else I saw was not expected - the drain drips out right above the exhaust outlet!! I rolled it ahead 5 or six feet before starting the engine. I am going to look into routing that drain elsewhere for sure.

Not all jobs are equal. This job is a fine example of one that should be phased out (outsourced).

My Mom and Step-Dad lived in Jersey for 12 years. It was my opinion that there would be a lot more gas stations and cars blown up if the general population of that state pumped their own gas.
I revisited the state a few years ago while working for the US Govt and went to fill up our $1M Comm vehicle. I pulled up, got out, put the nozzle in and started filling. The guy comes running around the back and yells "NO NO, I PUMP I PUMP!" I looked at him, pointed at the truck and said "No, I pump." He looked at the black beast with all the antennas and odd boxes and Govt plates and with a confused and scared look on his face said. "ok, but you pay". "Yes, I pay" I said.

I believe it's a union requirement.

I think it's like the Gas Pumpers Local 428 or something.

I don't think a Union can impose a law on the general population. In NJ, it's a state law.

No offense to your parents, but having visited all sections of NJ at one time or another, the citizens blowing themselves up might not be such a bad idea ;)

I'm from Oregon...

No, it's not some Union thing. It's just never been challanged. We have self serve gas stations, but those are mostly commercial gas stations (Pacific Pride, etc.) in which you have that specific gas station card. Great if you own a business or are truck driver.

And yes, it adds jobs. Plus, gas is only about 4-9 cents more expensive than any other state I've lived in for the past 15 years. I've lived in CA, CO, NE, IA, NC, IL, WA, ID, and AZ. It's not that bad. It's a trip having been gone sometime, now, going back, getting out to pump my own gas and the kid comes along and says.. Hey, can I help you?

Plus, most gas stations in Oregon still check your oil if you want, and they wash your windshield. All part of the experience. I used to pump gas as a kid. 14 yrs old with a work permit in Oregon, and trying to pumy 5-6 cars at a time, all with differnt size tanks and windshields and checking oil. Plus, incase you didn't know, it can get kind of cold in Oregon. It likes to rain a lot, too. Sometimes the job is brainless, but man somedays, it's pretty demanding.

Anyway, think about it, for every gas station, you hire 4 people at least to pump gas. That' s a lot of jobs. Unemployment isn't as big an issue as most other states. We have it, don't get me wrong, but, having lived a lot of places, it seems to not be that bad. Plus, it's kind of nice just rollin up and saying, fill er' up.

Side note, whenever ANY motorcycle showed up, I just said, do you want to do this, sir? They were usually all too happy to pump it themselves. Some just walked off to go inside to get a corn dog and said, "hey kid, don't spill any on the tank! Fill it up! Makes you nervous when some 320 lb. Long haired big bearded dude in a leather vest with vietnam patches on it, says that to you.

We have jobs created by pumping gas in TN as well.

We have a tax imposed in every gallon. That tax goes to pay for roads. We hire road workers, concrete manufacturers, asphalts workers, mechanics, parts suppliers, etc.

The difference is we get something for the employment. We have the best roads in the US, period.

Our prices are on par with NJ's.

Thats exactly what I meant. I'm from TN, my StepDad from Pittsburgh. It sucked living at the corner of Rt 18 and the NJTP, even if it was only for the summers.

And yes, TN has some of the best roads. I used to run time trials to get to school every morning. Knew every inch of that road, even some of the ditches.

small world, Kdan ;) after working at the Citgo i was over on Hope street at Karps TrueValue hardware for years. used to deliver up Long + High Ridge all the time.

back to the topic.. . i seem to always run into cool 'pump jockeys' in MA. they like to listen to the Muell pull in/out, always have questions and NEVER touch it. one small town gas station i frequent has a few kids working there, first time in he came out, handed me a rag and said, 'my dads a biker, here's a rag in case you spill any, i already know you wanna pump your own.' ... heh. sure do, kid. step away from the beast ;)

Would the station be responsible if they spilled some on a translucent air box cover and ruined the plastic?

^^^^^^^^
I bet the have a sign somewhere that says we are not responsible for damages to vehicle...

Seems like everywhere you go noone wants to take responiblity if anything happens even though your putting your pride and joy into there care, but they dont care at all about it

In Oregon we have had several votes to turn over the no self service law, all have failed. Usually the adds run to the effect that some little old Grandma will have to pump her own gas in her Church clothes. The law is enforced by the State Fire Marshall. They have been known to sit down the road from filling stations, and levey 10,000 dollar fines for letting people pump their own gas. Their seems to be an understanding that motorcyclists can pump their own, but you mustn't take the nozzle from the pump.

Somehow I doubt that its coincidence that their license plates are the same color as caution signs.

I live in Washington and have to add my $0.98 ($0.02 after inflation) to this discussion. I go through Oregon on occasion and don't mind the whole "full-service" thing. In Washington we have "self-serv" and still maintain the highest gas tax in the country and our roads are the worst! At least Oregon has some nice roads. While it's fine for them to pump gas in my car, I don't like anyone touching my bikes, especially with a paint stripper! The last time I rode through on my custom Harley chopper none of them even tried to pump it, and one told me that their law reads "out of state plates can pump their own gas". I guess it's cool that they still give you service, but don't touch my bike!

Living in Washington, I do travel to Oregon regularly. I don't mind them pumping diesel into my GMC, but I don't want anyone pumping into my bikes.

A buddy and I did a trip down there last year-he ended up having to use my Buell and I rode my Wide Glide. Only had trouble at 1 station-kid wouldn't budge-so we drove across the street.

Was just down there this weekend and diesel is 15 cents a gallon less than in Washington.

On the plus side, we don't have an income tax in Washington.
