Hi folks, Need the all-knowing help of badweb again. Just bought my second Buell, an '04 XB12R. I live up in Canada and its been a COLD long winter so far. I know the guy I bought the bike off so I trust him, BUT I thought I would crank the bike over to see if she would start (I so miss the rumble) and UH-OH very load CLACK CLACK CLACK coming from somewhere below the seat. I know thats not very specific but it was suck a racket I am scared to hit the starter again for fear of doing damage. The bike has been in an unheated garage the whole time, so it has been sitting at below zero temps. My garage is semi-heated so it has been sittin around +10 degrees celcius for a week. Any ideas? | ||

Mine did the same when the battery finally gave up the fight. Now is the motor turning over or is the starter just not up to the task. I say battery but explore all options, put a meter on it if its below 12.8 there is a good chance it wont start. Charge it and then go from there. | ||

Yeah if the motor's not turning over, it's definitely the battery. Throw a charger/tender on it for a while and see what happens. Shouldn't hurt anything, me and a few guys I know have had the same problem when it came time to get a new battery. When my battery started going bad mine would do that, and to tell you the truth if you keep holding the start button, it might finally grab and turn over the motor. | ||

I know when my battery is not up to the task (like a few hours after forgetting to turn off my heated grip wraps *Doh*) I get a clack clack clack then nothing. well... nothing but embarrassment that is  | ||

As an engineer and car mechanic I'd would say it sounds like a weak battery or its just really cold. My bike doesn't run right at all when its below freezing, on nights like those i keep it inside so I can ride it in the morning. But I would try heating up the garage its in or bring it inside to let it get warm and try it again. | ||

Yes. Warmer batteries will charge 'better'. Even if it does start after being warmed up a bit, it's still in need of a charge. I prefer the battery MINDer over the tender because it constantly de-sulphates as it charges. |
