Hey y'all...

I've been hangin' in lurk mode for some time and apparently your "bad influence" rubbed off on me --> I got my new 07 Lightning Long on Wednesday. I put my down payment just before Christmas and Topeka Harley traded for one 4 weeks ago...in the WRONG COLOR!!! I waited 4 more weeks until they could get the black rims/plastics swapped out from the Sunset Orange. Anyway...glad to be a "true member" now. I have only had the chance to ride it down my block as it is cold and there are still remnants of snow.

I've already tuned the suspension, ordered the Service Manual from Al and removed any "uneccessary" plastics and reflectors.

Quick Question: It's pretty cold here in Kansas City (35 degrees F) right now and the new ride does not want to start today...it did start no problem the day I got her but for some reason does not want to start. Any suggestions? Bad gas? Flooded?

Thanks for any help.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! You've made a good decision. I do have to give mine a little throttle when it's cold but be careful not to flood it and foul the plugs.

One thing I found while in college in Kansas...battery tender was my best friend, the cold just sucked the energy out of em...congratulations on your bike.

Congrats! Describe what you mean she wouldn't start. Low battery? Turns over but no fire? That engine's pretty tight right now so I wouldn't worry too much about when she gets cantankerous on cold days until you get a few miles on her.

Hey dude, there's like half a dozen of us buellers here in Olathe/Overland Park. Maybe we can get together and take a look at it so we can go ridin this season! Where at in Olathe?

I know sometimes if the battery starts getting low, it does seem harder to start, especially in the cold. But being a new bike, I wouldn't think that would be a problem? I know when I got mine from the dealership, it ran like crap just because it had been sitting and only started to move it around or whatever which is bad for it not being able to warm up and cycle fluids and all....

Head over to the 'Storm Fronts' under 'KCLW', that's is where we're all at, and introduce yourself.

Hey welcome to the family! I had trouble starting my CityX on a cold morning a little throttle did the trick. Good to see another Buell in the KC area!

yeah what they said and you got to remember you are running 20w50 oil, pretty damn thick, like molassis when its 30 degrees out. But for my bike its best to not touch the throttle and just keep cranking till she fires but dont crank for more than 15 seconds or so as that can damage your starter. If it takes longer than that take it back to the stealership and complain so they tryn fix it for free or dont start it unless its warm enough to ride. Also I second the notion that battery tender is your friend. Or you could keep it in a heated garage or living room like me! And if you do get it started when its that cold for Gods sake dont rev the shit out of it at the first sign of life like some people insist on doing! Cold start up is the most wear intensive time in any engines life, it takes a few seconds for oil to reach the lifters and other top end parts, reving the shit out of it cold is the worst thing you can do for your new engine other than draining the oil out and running it like that ( basically the same thing). But yeah most buells are "cold natured" as we say in the south and if it was started and shut off without warming up a zillin times at the stealership so the harley fans could see what it sounds like it may take you a ride or two to " blow the carbon out of it" before it starts and runs like it should.

Thanks Dustin & Terry! I'd be glad to go ridin' with y'all once it gets a bit warmer and I get used to her. I live out in south Olathe (159th and MurLen area).

Phil, I meant that the starter is trying it's best to turn the beast over, but the engine won't fire...I'm gonna remove the spark plugs and see if they're fouled. My guess is I applied a tad too much throttle due to the difficulty in starting in cold weather and fouled the plugs.

A.J. & Dale...thanks for the suggestion --> I'll be gettin' a battery tender very soon. Any recommendations on model or brand?

Thanks everyone...glad to be part of the family.

Jason,

There are a few of us really close (128th Blackbob). Ya we have a really good group here in KC and it is actually probably one of the larger groups around in the US. I would say we have a total of around 50 of us when we all get together. But usually we always have 10 or 15 of us when we go ride.

I am pretty sure that Lowflyer lives really close to you since he has a 1min commute to his job at Garmin.

Glad to hear you got your bike from Topeka, Mike Patterson is a really nice guy and really wants to expand his Buell operations, did you goto the new shop in Lawerance to pickup your ride?

You will definately have to come to a BBQ or two and meet everyone. We usually have friday night rides where we go to FUEL for $1 burger and then ride somewhere. Don't be a stranger and post up in the storm fronts under KCLW, this goes for you too Coyote.

Oh ya, Coyote there are a few people with Buell's in your neck of the woods also but seem to be more out here on the Kansas side of the city.

Check out www.illconduct.com Jumpin Jeff is one of our local Bueller's and if you ever see Shazam learking about you have to see his monster XB14.

Tim...I bought mine from Jim Curtis at Topeka. These guys went out of their way to get me on a Buell - They looked in 10 states for an XB12Ss and then took a sunset orange one and converted it to black (or how the story goes anyway). The...ummm...uhhhh..."folks" at Gail's told me they could get me one in June of `07 and that was when I was pre-approved to buy one in November `06. I guess they really didn't want my money.

Lookin' forward to meetin' up with y'all once it gets warmer.

Cheers...Delk

Cold starts can be tricky. These bikes really don't want you messing with the throttle during starting & warm up.
When it's freezing out you sometimes don't have a choice.
I'm lucky in that I live in an area that rarely drops below the high teens F. I have noticed though that when it's below 30 degrees it sometimes takes my bike a couple starts to idle on it's own.
It basically goes like this; Turn key on, wait for dash to do it's thing. Hit starter, bike starts, runs for 30-40 seconds, dies. Turn key off. Turn key on, wait for dash to do it's thing. Hit starter. Bike starts. Bike runs fine & all is good.
I make an effort to not blip the throttle during start or warm up because it's easy to foul the front plug by doing so. (Fuel injection sends fuel then air so it's easy to foul plug while the mixture is really rich for warm up).

Oh yeah, Welcome to BadWeb.

Welcome to the party! Come in relax. Have a Buell cocktail.

It's two parts think
one part twist
and one part lean
Garnished with a really big grin

Congrats!
I own an '06 Long and I'll never forget the day it came home. Best advice-pull the battery out and put a battery tender on it. I keep the batteries out of the Ss, my wife's Blast, and our quads on a shelf in the laundry room and all on tenders. Never have had to replace or had any battery problems with this method. Hope this helps!
