Hey guys. Thought I'd report on a little job I just finished up on my bike. I installed a Ulysses bug shield with the tall touring windshield on my Lightning. The job was complicated by running Crossroads flat bars. This put the master cylinder in the way, but I was able to modify it and get everything to fit and it really looks good!

However, that big of a windscreen on the Lightning is like riding with a sail. I took her out on the superslab and along about 80 or so I really started getting a lot of head shake and had to shut her down. In addition the bike's wheelbase is so short, the top of the shield is only inches from your neck (with Crossroads bars) which won't allow you to tuck in at all because it's in the way of your helmet. I think Dave was calling this "The Decapitator" the other day when I ordered it. Now I know why. LOL!

So, I'm going to exchange the touring shield for the stock Uly shield. This should turn out just right I think. So, if any of you Lightning owners are looking for an easy way to really dress up your front end and add some wind protection, go with the standard height shield. I'll take some pics of the touring shield and standard shield when I get it and post them for you guys.

Ejiii,
Are you running that on yours, and if so how do you like it at say around 75 mph?

Yeah, that shield is probably going to work. I had no idea how freakin' big the touring shield is! The lower black shield is way bigger than the Lightning shield too, but I really like that one. It looks way better than the stocker. I even got my Lightning emblem off the old shield with a blowdryer and will put it on the Uly shield as soon as I go buy some emblem glue.

As for pics, I dropped my D**N camera last weekend and broke the battery door clip. I've got to take it back to the store for repairs. As soon as I get it back I'll post pics. Figures, I bought it 12/26/06. Didn't make it very far before I broke the darn thing. The sucky part about that is I also bought a leather case to protect it, but the one time I decide to carry it around out of the case it fell out of a jacket pocket when I bent over to pick up my nephew and it smacked the tile floor. Camera went one direction, the battery door the other.

Should used the Enfield wind screen. It saw 100+ with no problems.

Nother option in screens is the http://www.zerogravity-racing.com/sportbikes/buell _sptbks/858.htm screen. It's taller and wider than the stocker, but not quite as tall as the Buell Tall screen. I've not used the ZG screen, but I know a few folks are happy with them.

It's too bad the Cee Bailey's +2.5 is no longer available. It really is the best screen for the Uly, IMO.

The picture shows my current setup. It works great, 110-120MPH has caused no problems at all. It takes the major wind blast off the chest. It was well worth the time and cost.

Yeah I saw 140 with the Enfield. How you doing Bill? Unfortunately when I put the Crossroads on it wouldn't fit anymore. The Uly screen just clears the top of it. That's the only reason it's once again sitting in a closet. I liked it while it worked though. Thanks again.

This is what Bill's talking about for those of you scratching your heads right about now...

Uhhh...."it" is the top of the master cylinder. Sorry, it's late and I've been running on 3 hours sleep every night all week. I am SOOO about to crash for 12 hours.

By the way, I'd be glad to pass the Enfield screen on to the next guy if anyone wants it. It'll fit the S perfectly as long as you're not running Crossroads bars. This isn't a very good shot, but I've got it fastened onto the bug screen with three chrome license plate fasteners. Shoot me a PM if anyone would like to have it. It's in pretty good shape and it only took about 30 minutes to drill the holes and mount it. Did a good job of cutting the wind off my chest without causing any unsettling effects to the way the wind interacts with the bike.

Hogs,

You need the Uly "flyscreen", Uly standard windshield, 4 plastic windshield mounting pins and 4 flyscreen grommets. It's all stock Uly stuff. I got mine from Daves. I went to the hardware store for 4 longer SS mounting bolts but the stock ones will work. In my opinion it was well worth the $120 or $140 (I forget now).

Hogs, slight correction to those directions. The new Uly windscreens only require the purchase of four rubber grommets. The windshield has two permanently mounted pins (top) and two that come with it that are screwed into it (bottom). Get with Adam over at Appleton. He'll hook you up. I sent off my touring windshield today and am waiting to get the standard height one. I can't wait!

Here's some shots of the bugscreen. I should get the standard height windscreen sometime next week. Note the cutout I made to accommodate the master cylinder. My little dremel and a flat file did the trick.

It's a Uly flyscreen on a Lightning with Crossroads bars. It's way bigger than the stock Lightning screen and the bars moved the master cylinder forward. I think it's an improvement despite having to notch it like that. It'll be even better with the windscreen attached. You don't like it?

Thanks man. You shouldn't have to do that on your wife's Scg. It should be just a matter of laying the stock flyscreen on top of the Uly screen and drilling your four holes.

Yeah, it's glossy. You can see the reflection of the garage behind me in the 2nd shot I posted above. Matches the original plastics on my Lightning perfectly. I took the Lightning emblem off the old screen and glued it on the Uly one after I took the Ulysses emblem off with a blow dryer. And yes, it's quite a bit wider; a good 1.5 to 2 inches wider on each side (didn't measure the difference). A couple of inches taller too. Compare the pics I posted to what yours looks like right now.

Short of doing the R conversion, I couldn't be happier with what I think it's going to look and perform like when I get the windshield on it. I decided not to do the R conversion because I understand you lose the ability to lock the forks.

You guys that own R's, do the forks lock? I'm curious about why moving the ignition and installing the R top triple tree wouldn't let you still lock it. That is unless you guys can't lock the forks in the first place?

YEs you can lock the folks on the r models same as ya can on the S models But when ya change the top tree on the S to a R style you will just need to get the R type ignition switch as they are either longer or shorter than the S ones I forget which it is BUT the s and the R switches are different in lengths...

Philip,
Thanks for the pics and the update, I thought about doing that myself but I also have Crossroads bars so I wasn't sure if it would work.

Ah, I see about the R conversion. I still may do it later on. I'll probably be happy with the Uly screen for this year though.

And you're welcome Ken. It's not too hard. Measure three or four times, drink a beer, think about it, come back the next day and measure again, and then go to town with a dremel. I used tape to mark the lines I wanted to cut. I started cutting what I knew for sure wouldn't be enough and then cut a little more I think three more times until I got it just right. I figured too little was better than too much.

I would have hated to have Dave laugh at me if I had called him back asking to order another one because I f****d up the first time around. That screen wasn't cheap.
