So I stopped by Meredith HD today. A was let in on a few secrets picked up at the latest dealer meeting.
1. A buell dirt bike is in the works. 450cc...
2. A brand new bike in the works...
3. No more 9 motor availability...
4. And something big, no info available..

This was the extent of what I learned. Am I johnny come lately? If so, what else does anyone know about any/all of these topics.

#3 is false IIRC.
The XB9R is being discontinued. But the CityX is still being produced.

Hi Johnny!
Couldn't resist

They did not say anything about cc size at the dealer meeting, that is a guess on their part.

They have not announced anything about getting rid of the XB9SX

Buell always has new bikes in the works, just like every other company

With the exception of the false statement about the 9, the other 3 points could all be about the same product...

The Blast is 492cc.
1/2 of a 984 motor

it is not going to be a Blast motor in the new bike

it is not going to be a Blast motor in the new bike

Thankfully!!

It will need to be a lot lighter/more powerful than that if it is to cut it in the fiercely competitive off road market. 60bhp singles are now getting to be quite common, whereas it was once almost unheard of to achieve such high figures with a 'one lunger'.

The 450 class is probably the most hotly contested already, with all the major factories having a stake in it, and both Yamaha & Honda have class leading bikes in that category. Benelli and others will be joining the fray soon too.

Then there is Highland, who coincidentally have a new 450 engined bike.....Wonder if Buell will be buying their engines (Hmm Deja Vu, I've started this rumour before) ;)

The Highland engine has 56.4bhp in SM form and the whole bike weighs just 103kg.

I wonder if I could put one in an XB frame?

I meant to say: do you remember the Blast's history? The 492cc mono was a starting point for the 984cc XB engine... : )

A 450cc would be a very bold move. It would put Buell in direct competition with the major manufacturers, which is not the direction Buell usually goes.

It's well below freezing outside, and I'm home sick with a fever. Winter speculation seems like a good thing to do, right now.
It's been said by people who should know that Buell has been hiring "a few" talented engineers over the past few years. I don't believe these guys are just lounging around designing the occasional chrome axle cap. I think we're going to see a new platform with a new, designed-in-house engine family.
I also think we're going to see some variations on the XB platform. The XB platform is versatile enough that there are quite a few variations that would probably excel in their niche. I keep hoping for a Sport Tourer, but I don't think Erik will build one. I do think though, that an XB equivalent of the M2 might be a good thing. Shorter suspension with less travel than a Ulysses so shorter riders will be able to hold it up at a stop, with a comfortable seat that accommodates a passenger, and the option to accessorize. Make hard bags available, grip heaters (what ever happened to the heaters for the Uly?), maybe even adjustable bars.
Everyone is in a dither about the dirt bikes, but nobody is looking at the street line. I really think there might be something good about to blindside us.

I've been thinking about getting a dirt bike for a while, now. If anything that BMC comes up with is half as cool as the XB, count me in. Where do I sign?}}

I am very interested!

I think the dirt bike move is indeed a test bed for a new engine design. A lower price point, smaller displacement engine would be a great place to work the bugs out before you move up line.

I see it the same as what VW did. They introduced the Passat in a W8 format as a test bed for the W12 engine.

Might these be..........watercooled?
