My buddy Mike is looking to buying a Buell. Awesome, finally one of my friends man's up and buys a bike and a Buell no less. He wants to know whether he should buy a 9 or 12. I told him I love my 12 but I have never ridden a 9. Can you guys help him out with some personal experiences, stories, charts, anything. He'll be checking this thread so if you can direct it towards him and tell him to hurry up already that would be awesome. Thanks.

I had the choice, rode 'em both, and got the 9. After two seasons and three sets of tires, I'm still completely happy with it. For the twisty roads I ride, I don't think a 12 would necessarily be any better.

But it's a personal choice.

I thought I heard the 9 Firebolt wasn't going to be offered next year so if that is true go with the 9. Since the XBs' don't hold their value well at all at least it may have some sort of collectors value down the road (slim chance but better than nothing).
I have ridden a 12 briefly and didn't see anything that warranted the extra couple grand. I bought the 9 instead.
Either way they are pretty neat little pocket bikes

I tend to ride with the RPMs up. I sometimes wonder if I wouldn't like the 9 better.

If I could fit on one, I'd like to try.

I would have opted for a XB9Ss just because I don't ride hard enough to need the extra punch, but alas, such a beast wasn't (and still isn't) available. I needed a Long no matter what the displacement was, so I wound up with a 12. No regrets, but I really can't say which I would like better, having never ridden a 9.

The very best way for you friend to figure it out is to take a demo ride.
I've ridden the piss out of both bikes.
I like the nine best, but that's just me.
It fits the way I ride.
I can late brake like you wouldn't believe (I can on a twelve too) but I feel like I can get out of the curve a lot sooner and harder on a nine.

Oh, sorry, is "that's just me" for me too... but after 18.000 kilometers on a MY03 XB9S and 33.000 Km on a MY04 XB12S I'm now back to a XB9 because the 984 engine is definitely better! ;)

I bought my 9s and I love it. I have only had Japanese sport bikes before this and i dont think I will ever go back. the only 12 I have ridden is an X1. I loved the torque of it but my 9 is just perfect for me.

I wish I had a dealer to go demo a new 12. Of course that may just put me more in debt!

No replacement for displacement is not always true. What about turbos, nitro, and more pistons? Thats harley mentality your talk'n.

I had a CityX [XB9SX]
and loved it
I now have a XB12R
and love it

The 12 definately has more immediate punch, but the 9 reved higher.

I think a bigger decision was the body style. I found out that I just like the crotch rocket riding postion more and went back to that.
The new transmission and clutch were another huge selling point for me

best advice on the thread was
test drive both
People like different things, this way your friend gets a back to back comparision and can make the choice that is right for him
