Hi,

Does someone know if it is possible to change the Oil Pump Drive gear without rotating down the engine ?

In theory it is possible.

Here is the rub... the rocker boxes have to be removed to take the spring pressure off the pushrods that are loading the cams that sit in the bushings built into the cover you have to remove to get to that gear.

That being said, I had a chat at my local dealer, and while he said he does not necessarily recommend it, you can get that cover off without removing the rockerboxes.

He said something about a putty knife, and rotating the engine crank to the right position.

I am guessing you pick the cam of interest, move the engine to the right rotational position, insert that cam, then rotate the engine again to the next position.

It would probably work. The downside will be getting all the cam timing marks lined up right, the risk of creating some sort of scratch / defect in a cam surface (which are probably very sensitive), and heavily loading a cam only supported from one side (by a single bushing) instead of two.

I might be willing to try it though. I did not remove the rocker boxes when I dismantled my cam cover on my M2, and I don't remember anything being that hard to pull apart. Taking the rocker boxes off, especially on an XB, would be a LOT of time (though not that hard), meaning even going slowly and carefully with lots of plastic parts instead of metal parts and fussing with crank rotation could still be a big net gain in terms of time spent.

Is your gear badly worn? It's easy to inspect it without major disassembly, its actually replacing it that gets ugly.
