i have a vision, and i can't make it happen on my own. i want a carbon fiber hugger, but not in any of the shapes and sizes that i've seen offered. i have to find someone to one-off it for me. i don't know where to start to find this person, though. any ideas? | ||

Plan on paying for it right now. Unless things have cleared up CF is hard to come by now since the DOD is sucking it all up for the war. That was the last I heard and things may have changed but that was the last I knew. HTH | ||

thanx for the warning. if CF is out, what about fiberglass? somebody with the know how to create a one-off piece. i could build it out of metal, but i can't find anything light enough for this application. | ||

here's the deal. real simply, use the stock hugger mounting holes (the two the existing hugger uses) and build an actual rear fender the prevents roostertail. something similar to a jesse james rear fender... | ||

Thanx, Mxer. if it works, maybe we can put it up on badweb for all who would like to have one! i don't have the know-how to do some of this stuff. i just have the idea. i already see inherent problems with my design too (since it only mounts on those two screws in the front) but i figure there's enough knowledge here to make it happen. | ||

hi..............building a carbon fiber rear section for the XB is a nice idea. You first of all need to build a dummy. From this you need to create a mold. This usually takes an experienced guy arround 1-2 weeks solid work to make it worth while. People generally use an epoxy resin for the mold to avoid the problems with the styrol from polyester, which makes it a bit more expensive. The mold has to be created in such a way, that you can get the piece out without destroying the mold obviously. Another thing you need to get under control is the design of your rear section in terms of stability and weight. You will not need vacuum bagging for this as it only makes the whole thing more complicated and can actually draw air into the laminate where you do not want it. You may ask yourself why I know these things.........well I am currently building a part for the XB in carbon and I also have provided Thorsten Durbahn in Germany with a sample part and I have asked him to build a carbon fiber tail section for my XB R. Weight target around 1500 gramm. Get yourself some help by an expert or source the job out to somebody like Thorsten...........you may want to check out www.durbahn.de . This job is a lot more complicated than it seems at first hand and it takes a lot of research and expertise to be successful.
