Buy the $30 underseat heatshield from Odie (Special-Ops). It makes wonders in riding comfort on hot days. BTW, remove it for winter so you get that much-needed toasty butt.

MTSM,

Heat should get less as bike's engine breaks in. Although at 3000km (~1864 miles) it should be pretty well broken in. Changing to synthetic oil will help significantly.

The fan should definitely be working. If you bought your bike new, it should still be under warranty. If not, a replacement isn't that expensive. If you can't get one in Brazil, contact Badweb member Daves (see Appleton Buell in the sponsor's section) and he can fix you up.

Other things you can do to reduce the heat include either wrapping the headers with insulating material (header wrap) or have them coated with ceramic material by "Jet Hot" or another similar vendor. Badweb sponsor Odie sells heat insulating shields that can be installed under the seat and airbox to reduce the heat transmitted to the rider. See his website at: http://www.specialops-online.com/

Good luck.

All I can say is it takes about 5000 miles for the engine to really break in.
Mine was very hot & the fan ran non stop untill I had close to 6000 miles on it.
She's mellowed out a lot since then.

I have close to 10K now & the fan still comes on a lot in the summer but I don't get as much heat.

Could the reason your fan stopped working be that it is winter? Does it still come on after shut down after a long ride? It should. If after a long ride it doesn't come on after shutting her off then the fan itself could be defective or the temperature sensor could be defective or there could be a loose wire somewhere.

Synthetic oil helps - Odie's heat shields work well, but the heat on your leg is from the exhaust header pipe.

I installed a heat shield with header wrap just under the shield.-- The shield without the wrap under it gets almost as hot as the pipe since the metal to metal contact conducts the heat well.

This set-up keeps my leg from getting too hot.

Wow, that's one big-a$$ windshield you've got there, Old_man!

I've got that same exhaust shield... dunno about deflecting actual heat, but it sure looks good!

No the fan simply doesnt come anymore , since i live in rio de janeiro , the word "winter" is something different ....here in winter i have 30 celsius , but anyway its summer and its even hotter eheh , the fan sometimes starts working...but in a very low rpm....i cant even hear that loud ZZZZZzzzZZZ that it always does.
the problem is that the parts will take some 40 days to get here...so i hope that when i take it to hd dealer they dont tell me "you cant ride your bike until the new fan arrives"...and i cant wait 40 days : (

If your bike is getting hot and the fan is not even coming on after turning the bike off you should stop riding immediatley! Without that fan sucking heat away from the rear cylinder you are just asking for a melt down. Since it does come on occasionally you don't have blown fuse, but there may be something obstructing the fan that is keeping it from coming on. I would check that first, and then pull the fan motor and test it. In my opinion it sounds like your fan motor has or is dying.

Even though it is hot out there don't expect to wear short pants. Even if the fan is working it will boil the hide off your thighs. I tried it last summer when it was 95F here. If that is the case try the heat shields and the header wrap.

Shine those pipes with mothers brand cleaner.

When the pipes don't shine the heat transfer to your leg will be immediate.

The difference is like wearing a black or white t-shirt to the beach on a hot day.

I agree that your fan is defective and should be replaced, but you aren't going to "melt down" your motor. The Engine Control Module has a protection feature that will be enabled if the engine gets too hot. If the engine gets too hot, the engine light will start to flash and the engine will go into "skip spark" mode (firing each cylinder only every power stroke). It certainly won't run well in this mode, so you'll notice it quick.

The lack of an operating fan will cause the oil to "coke" inside the rear cylinder head when you shut the engine off, which was the main thing the fan was added to prevent. Over time, this will build up and cause problems (plugged oil passages, etc.) so you should correct the problem soon and change your oil when you do, which'll give you a good opportunity to switch to synthetic.

A significant number of the 2006 Ulysses models had fans which failed early. If you check the "Big, Bad and Dirty" forum you'll find several similar descriptions of failed fans. Replace the fan, add some heat shield s and exhaust header wrap or coating and you should be good to go.

In the U.S., it's available at many auto parts stores and at practically all places that sell high performance auto parts. On line, you can get it from summitracing.com, eastwood.com and similar automotive performance suppliers. About 50 feet of 2 inch wide wrap is required.

You can buy a kit that includes several feet of wrap and stainless steel zip ties to secure it. They also sell a special spray coating/paint that will seal the material and make it last longer.

You can see photos and how-to instructions in this thread:

I have the Odie heat shields night and day difference.. There must be something to the shiny pipe thing...

On my city X the fan hardley comes on.. I run Synthetic.. It runs evertime after I turn it off just doesn't run as much as other peoples bikes when its on..

If your fan is never running even when you turn it off something is wrong...

I'm Curious... Your from Brazil what kind of fuel are you putting in your bike.. I know more alcohol can decrease engine temps..

our gas uses about 20% alcohol if im not wrong...and most of the cars here are using alcohol only already.....we just reprogram the fuel injection and start using alcohol oin cars...no other modification required.
dunno if anyone tried to do it on motorcycles..anyway cars come alcohol/gas ready from factory now.
