I bought a 2003 XB9S a few months ago. The previous owner dented the original pipe, so he put a stock one on it from an XB12R. The interactive exhaust valve is of course not connected to anything. The valve is in the 'default' position (the position it's held in by the return spring). Any of you have any dyno runs or personal experience of a bike set-up like this? Any advantage in finding a stock XB9 muffler to put back on it or do I just leave it as it is. I've put 200 miles on it and my seat of the pants feel is that it runs great!

It would run much better with a 9 muffler or an aftermarket one like a Drummer or D+D
The muffler you have on now is closed up and will hurt your top end power.

Stock or aftermarket + race or re-flashed ecm. A freer flowing exhaust on a stock ecm will cause it to run well, but hot.

Ditto what Daves said.

I have been running a factory Race Pipe and K&N filter with the stock ecm and pro series plugs for over 35k with no trouble. Matter of fact I am running a little on the rich side going by the carbon deposits on the tops of the pistons and valves from my re-ringing session a few months back, and the occasional fouled plug.

I'm wondering if that's really true? In the stock 9 muffler, the exhaust gasses make the '3 passes' through the pipes in the muffler. A stock 12 muffler on a 9, with the valve disconnected is the same setup ('3 passes' through the pipes). Unless I'm overlooking something else?

Don't know why you would want a 12 pipe on a 9, but I got a 9 on a 12.

I was surprised by this, too. I thought the 12 muffler with the valve closed would be the same as a stock 9 muffler. But, DaveS knows more about it than I do.

If you are still concerned, just wire or weld open the valve.

Either way, the stock muffler is tuned to the engine for which it was intended. I ran my Ulysses with the valve wired open for a few rides. And, other than a little more bark during WOT. There was no noticeable change in performance, perceived from my butt dyno.

Get rid of that heavy monstrosity and put an aftermarket exhaust on it. I personally run a straight pipe with mods to give it back pressure and battle the reversion wave without losing power.

I've run my present setup for a year with noticeably more power than stock and no engine problems. Best of all it cost less than 30 bucks.
