So I had to go to the LA office this morning from my home In Huntington Beach, CA, which is about 48-miles. News reports said that we might see a .10 of an inch tonight, and the sky, while a little cloudy, was mostly sunny. So I figure I was good and to circumvent the am traffic, I decided to take the Buell. It was sufficiently cold enough that I decided to use my FXRG jacket and pants and get comfy. As I got closer to work the clouds got a little darker, then all of the sudden..... RAIN! Freakin' rain. While most of you are lambasting me right now because your Buells are locked down for winter, I live in So Cal because we don't have winter and I can usually ride 11 months of the year. I avoid riding in rain, the City Hero has never seen it, but there we were, oil slicked freeways, cell-phone induced drivers, and 45 degree rain. Well, fortunately for me the FXRG does exceptional in the rain, and except for my fingers, I was toasty, and the Buell took it all in stride. Not something I would want to do on a regular basis, but it was nice to know I was ready for it.

Stupid rain. : )

Dude... I guess you have to put it all into perspective, eh?

I'm from the Pacific Northwest originally, and now I am here in NC. While most Carolinians that I know hang up the helmet in Dec/Jan, I seem to relish the above 39 degree weather. I woke up the other day HAPPY it was above 33 and sunny so I could go riding.

I understand your anger though. I used to live near HB. And I loved the year round riding. However, here's what I have noticed about CA drivers in the rain. They are retards. Especially the first 31 minutes of rain. After that, not so bad. You need to quit worrying about the rain, dude. You ride in the rain when others are glued to their cell phones droning in the 405 traffic, bummed out that it's taking so long to get to the 605 to get to Long Beach, is what will separate you like separating the men from the boys.

Ride Hard
Ride Safe
and if you have to....

Ride wet.

Mark

He-heh, I figured Iw asn't gonna get any sympathy. And hey, it wasn't the rain that was bad, just all the idiots in cars and super slick road surface. But, hey, I just love riding my Buell. I was impressed with the Pirelli grip on the 10 while lane splitting in the first 10 minutes of the rain, but damnit I was glad to get off that cluster of a freeway. Fortunately I found a hole in the sky and flew home without a drop, made up for the miserable morning.

Here's to dry twisty roads and warm days!

Georgians are pretty well known for their speedy driving (or so a local news story claimed), especially around Atlanta. I think they said we ranked around 2nd or 3rd in the national "who exceeds the speed limit by the most mph" contest. What's crazy is that, when it rains, I swear they get faster. You wouldn't believe the number of people around here that think they can run 80 mph in a downpour with their SUV because "it's too heavy to hydroplane". Yeah, maybe, but what if you need to, I dunno, STOP?

Craziness. I avoid the big highways at all costs in bad weather, and that's in my car!

I like riding in rain when it's not too cold, not raining too heavily, I've got my rain gear on (Froggs Toggs +1) and when I'm riding on backroads with little traffic. The mountains are pretty cool in these conditions.

OTOH, rain and heavy traffic sucks! Here in Charleston, I notice the same phenomena as Swordsman mentioned in Atlanta: "Rain! AHH! I better haul a** so I can get home before I get in a wreck!"

Swordsman, I have been through Atlanta many times in many different vehicles. The last time was on my Uly on my way to and from Thunder beach in Panama City.

Sometimes I like to cruise at what ever speed the fast lane manages. It's weird going down 75 through town. At fifty miles out you can see the speed slowly creep up from 70mph. It seems like you gain 5mph for every ten miles.

On my way down as I entered the city limits, following a Beemer and a Lexus, I found myself cruising just over 100mph for the previous ten miles. Then they backed off to a nice 75 through town.

On the return trip it was raining and the speeds were exactly the same with a different group. Those Scorpion Syncs are awesome in the rain! It is NOT normal for me to run like that, but the Uly was so comfortable and confidence inspiring I couldn't help but let 'er run just to see how she'd do.

I'll ride this bike anytime. The only exception is that I hate the effects of road salt.

FYI, Any time I'm doubtful of the road conditions in the LA area, I always check this site, since I live close to Hermosa Beach and work in El Segundo, and on occasion, have to ride to the Huntington Beach office. It's particulary useful when I need to know if it's wet outside, because the office has no windows, or if I want to see a particularly glorious sunset, or check out the scenery on the strand. : )

Good ole' Georgia....

ridin' year round, baby. a set of underarmor cold gear under my jeans and i'm good down to about 40. after that, it's time for the carhart coveralls!! regardless, i'm in it. only thing is when its cold and it rains and the carhart gets wet and adds 497 pounds to the overall weight of me and the bike.

stupid rain....

The 13th? Can't say that I was for sure, Teeps.

Jen & I were heading to a 50th birthday party for a fellow surf-music fan at Suzy's in the cage about that time. 7 surf bands, rockin' til midnight, and Fun! Fun! Fun! is one way to chase the winter blahs (and rain) away ;)

I rode the CityX for 6 days in 50 degree rain at Americade last year. I so totally DO NOT feel your pain. Big props for riding anyway though.

40/40 is the rule. Above 40 degrees less than 40% chance of rain, you ride.

It would be nice to see them integrate a weather function on the GPS systems. Precip, temp, humidity, & wind. Hell I know it would be expensive, I bet my grand kids will get it, as a stock item : |
