The one with the pinup bombshells is nice, but those are not original nose art girls(as they're called on a fighter plane nose). They violate the 3rd party copyright rule in the contest! I could be wrong only if that person is the actual original artist of those pinups! I have that exact pinup girl that's on the airbox cover right here on my computer at work! I have had it for a long time! What gives? I want some answers! Makes me upset that someone else's could have been chosen in the top 10!... or even mine(not to sound arrogant);) I don't know, but it just made me super mad when I saw that one! Btw- I think the road #7 and the photograph one that looks like chrome are the two best.

Look at the one with the flames and dragon. Those flames look just like Stou's design.

I PMed Stou to see if that was his or not.

Just goes to show, sometimes it's best to beg forgiveness than permission.
Some of that old pin up art is royalty free, and some of it is in the public domain.
Especially the older stuff like 50-60 year old pin up work.

It maybe in the public domain but one of the rules stated it had to be original work...

That bites if that's the case Glitch. Even still, it's not very original because of it. Now, if they were his own pinups, that'd be different. I think Johnnymossville's Super hero design should have been put in.

I am with Spiderman on this one. That one ought to be disqualified.

for the record I am not saying anyone should be disqualified.

It way be one hell of a coincidence that the pin ups match or it may not.

I am still wondering about the flame/dragon one and if Stou is the creator of it...

As far as the "original artwork" thing goes - if it's in the public domain, then I would think it could be used as the artist pleases. Personally, I think the pinup girl idea is excellent in concept, but that design is aweful in execution.

On the same token, the design with the map surely isn't original work, so should they be disqualified as well??? While the map isn't original work, it was my favorite design.

No offesne to the at least one board member that made it into the finalist list (the cracked/dry looking mud is my second favorite), but I don't really like any of them. And the current top three are among my least favorite in the bunch.

Well, you guys are right. I don't think they should be "disqualified", but it seems that the contest rules of "originality" are pretty loose I guess. The pinup idea is good, but I agree, it could have been a lot better.

Not only does it violate the Copyright laws, it also violates one of the rules that stated "NOTHING THAT MAY BE CONSIDERED OFFENSIVE TO ANYBODY WILL BE ACCEPTED"

While I don't consider a pin up girl offensive, I'm sure a scantily clad woman wearing basically nothing but a garterbelt may be considered offensive to some. Personally, when I made my desing, I thought of doing the same thing, but because of copyright and the offensive rule, I opted not to.

I don't believe it should have been chosen.

I like the road one with #7 the best of the bunch.

I forgot about the "offensive" part too. Though I am not offended by it either, somebody out there might be. I want to point out that this design should have only two pinups flanking the side of the airbox to be consistent with a warbird. Having multiple girls pasted all over the place isn't traditional with this type of art. Where is the bird's name on the bike? There has to be a name. I don't see one.

The day when a pinup girl is offensive to bikers is the day I chew on a bullet. Are you f&*^in' kidding me? Our culture is FOUNDED on scantily clad women...saying it is offensive...well that offends me..lol. How could you even think that? Moreover why? This is the influence of those that should have stayed with brushing their wife's hair as a hobby and leave the biker lifestyle to those who live it. I know I am gonna catch hell for this one...oh yeah I voted for our homey, and I like the pin up girl and the one with the road is my favorite.

Did you read where I said I was not offended? I like pinup girls... we said someone out there possibly might be offended. That was just part of the contest rules. If this design was produced there might be some crazy-physco mom out there with her kids that sees it and gets offended. People like that do exist.

Liquor...while the vast majority don't consider it offensive and we live in a "risque" society. Buell's rules stated things like this were unacceptable to be entered.

Buell's current marketing has nothing sexually provacative in it from what I've seen.

45 - I agree completely. I went to a design school for a while, and the pinup bike is just sloppy. The same girl should have been on each side on teh tank, a name with it, and some bombs on the number plates to look like a drop count. I'd have put a crosshair on the fairing on the front, and tried to incorperate a WWII paint scheme - maybe work some invasion stripes in there somehow.

And pinup girls are not that scantily clad by todays standards. Keep in mind that no matter what you come with, someone would be offended by it just for the sake of being offended. I bet there's someone who objects to the plain white bodywork they come with now.

More is the reason to be what you are and submit what you wanted to make as opposed to what you "thought" they wanted. True art has no critic but that of the soul of the artist and therefore being offensive or beautiful remains the dominion of the beholder and the choice to love or hate can neither be explained nor planned for, therefore one should exhibit what flows from them naturally because true passion can be seen as well as attempts to be accepted....and yes I did read what you wrote...both of you and that prompted my response. Just being truthful.

DAMN, You mean I could have photoshopped some pinup girls on here? Or even the original tiger shark from the unit? For that matter i could have used the icons for the Triumphs, ducatis, hondas, yamahas, and suzukis for kills instead of the national flags (definitely public domain.) Still waiting on my damn test ride. PS notice cross hairs on front.

I saw you wrote that..but you presented it in a way that you felt you were slighted by obeying in your mind the rules and someone else that didn't obeyed "the rules" in your eyes was selected...so which is it? You think your work is better or you wish you had broken the rules and then you would've been selected????Possibly?? Rules are made to be bent to the point of broken...you should've bent a bit more maybe...

Now girls and a tigershark and hell yes allied as well as enemy planes..kill them all, let God sort 'em out..that would've been cool...very cool. LOL...I love that stuff man the birthplace of the real biker actually happened in the skies above Europe on bombers..that is the personification of the life..it's birth...definitely!!!
It birthed a few sayings as well..the first: The whole nine yards----because---nine yards of ammo so if you gave them all you had...you gave them the whole nine yards...cool huh?

Liquor... I would have broken the rules had I known they were loose and I would still have a chance to be picked. I'm not saying mine is better, but I kept the rules in mind when I designed it. I'm sure a lot of people had some cool ideas that they decided couldn't be done because they would violate the stupid rules. There is no point in making the discussion so trivial. The rules were there. It seems Buell has decided that the design meets the rule guidelines. That can be argued... as is being done. Having rules in a contest is pointless if they are going to be ignored by the judges.

Exactly...lesson learned...disregard the rules as ironclad and let flow the idea from inside you...six sigma calls this outward thinking...six sigma is just TQM of old, but it is the management du jour buzzword...so why not use the buzzword to your advantage...I would like to see your submission so we can judge for ourselves, and why not make what you wanted and post that as well...may not win a bike but at least like minded people could see it..

It is posted Liquor... look in the "contest" thread. Mine is the 45 degree Thunderstorm 1203 design. I am usually one to hate stupid rules anyway... and generally break them Haha. I wonder how many really good designs got canned because they were over the 2 MB size... they were very specific about that.

Cityxslciker - I remember your flags on the number plates - I won't lie that it wasn't an idea generator for me. I didn't remember the crosshairs though - nice touch!

BTW - Logos from other bike manufacturers are most certainly NOT public domain. I guaruntee every single one of them has a number of trademarks surrounding them.

I always thought this one had a very good fighter plane paint job. Don't know who's this is, but it's very well done... all that's missing is a bombshell girl to adorn the flanks. I would do mine like this if I had painting talent.

That's some dandy airbrush work. The rims should be aluminum or black.
