OK, here is my delima... I got my 2003 9R in 2004. I have had nothing BUT a great time every time I have been able to ride. I was in Hawaii where I was able to ride pretty much year round (if I was not deployed) since arriving back to the mainland...the great state of MO, I really have not had the opportunity to ride much(weather/work). Anywhots I have found out that I am deploying yet again in JULY for another year. My thing is should I sell my BABY and let someone use her like she needs to be used. I have just reached the 10,000 mile mark on her or do I hold on to her and hope that when I get back that I will not want to sell her and get a new buell and just save while I am there and take the chance of the market of a 9R going down especially with the (RUMORS) of no more Firebolts being produced. If I do sell what would be a fair asking price? I have run synthetic oil from the time I got the bike, swiss-cheesed airbox plus right side loud "arse" drummer with a custom paint job. She does have a few nicks and scratches from general use. but nothing major. I am just looking for general input guys...please try not to bash TOO hard.

Later,
Shawn

I'll store it in my garage for ya. And just to make sure the gas doesn't go stale I'll ride it now and then (daily).

Seriously, if you decide to sell, let me know.

If the bike is paid for and storage costs are minimal, I would keep the bike. If you change your mind when you get back, selling the bike will be easy since they will no longer be available.

Shawn

first off, thank you for your service in the army.

don't be concerned about the value of the bike. only the xb9r is being discontinued. buell is still going to make the 12r.

I'd sell it and buy the latest and greatest on return.

kdan brings up a very good point. sell your bike, and purchase the new one through military sales while you are on deployment. this way you can have a brand new bike waiting for you upon your return.(no storage fees or problems.)

Know what? I always hear this deal about military sales. If you've been in for a while you'll know the deal about military sales. I would never do it. Seems you are always paying too much. Plus, you are paying on that years model. You come back from deployment, and you have a year old bike with and you haven't even riden it. Look... Here's my take,

In the past 12 years hangin out with this little gun club we call the Marines, I have seen about 2 good experiences with military sales. Bad juju.

Second, sell the thing, save your money on deployment. If you're going to Iraq or Afghanistan, you know that your money becomes tax free and can really make some bread. If you're just going to like Oki or germany or something, just try to save that money you would have spent on bike payments in a savings, plus add about 100 bucks a payday to that and then come back from deployment and really start shopping.

Good Luck, dude.

If you seriously need any help, let me know.

Mark

On the military sales, I did it on my last deployment. I was on med hold coming out of the service. They found out I worked at a Harley Dealership and put me to work in the Mil sales down in Ft Bliss. These people do primarily cars. Their experience with motorcycles is MINIMAL. Only one other person I worked with there even rode. It is like order taking. If you know what you want ~ great. If you only have a vague idea that you want a bike they are less than helpful. I found that none of them even asked what type of riding you plan to do with a bike, or what your height is. Very critical for some of the Buell units (damn short inseam) Its like ordering pizza, if you know what you want it is good, but you also only have a color preference, not a guarantee, and you get surplus allocated units, very possible that you will have last years model. Bank the money tax free, stay safe, come back home to ride again. Thanks for your service Shawn_9r & Nutsnbolt

Thanks for all the input...storage is free (I have a 2 car garage) she has been paid off for awhile. I know about the military sales, have had experiences with both good and bad(not personal but some of my soldiers and peers) like "cityx" said if you know what you want you can get it. I am leaning toward selling(putting money in a decent account) and buying new when I get back. Now for the gamble...what would I be able to sell her for and since the 9R's will no longer be produced should I hold on until I get back(thinking there might be more of a demand) and hope to get more for her? Well, thanks guys for letting me bend your ears and the feed back. As for my service...IT'S MY PLEASURE!

Shawn,
I live pretty close to you, I live at the Lake of the Ozarks. We should get together and ride this spring before you get deployed. (If you don't sell the bike first!)

Shawn,

I had a similar thing happen to me with my Sportster, but I moved/changed jobs with an apartment in the ghetto, no place to keep it.

I was there for 3 years and kept the bike at my parents in the meantime, my dad rode it a few times, kept the cobwebs off it for that time and I'm SOOOO glad I did.

I'll never sell the bike as it's sentimental value is worth way more to me. If you really don't need the cash, don't sell.

That's my take.

I really don't think there's going to be any kind of jump in demand for used 9R's because Buell isn't making them anymore. You'd make more by selling the bike now and earning a little interest off the cash than you would in any kind of demand increase.

If you're set on buying something new when you get back, then I woudln't wait to sell as there's no point. If you're unsure, then don't sell. With free storage and no payments, you have nothing to lose unless you need the cash.
