I tried the search function and came up empty, so I'm trying here: I need to make a swingarm protector. I just did a chain conversion, did a 1 mile test ride, the chain adjuster loosened, and the chain cut into the swingarm. Can anyone give me tips on how to make and secure a swingarm protector for the top, front of the swingarm? I have some low friction snowmobile hifax but can't figure out how to secure it, other than drilling and taping the swingarm. I need to make something. I've spent over $1000 on the bike in the last couple of months just keeping it running, and can't buy a swingarm protector on top of all of the other things I've had to buy. Help please, and Merry Christmas! |

Maybe you need to take one link out of your chain?I have a couple of thousand miles on mine, 900 one weekend and it hasn't loosened yet. |

I think that is a good position to take, but it might have been better to PM Xbob in the first place rather than raise the concern here on the board. That is water under the bridge though. I'm sure that you guys can work out the answers that you're looking for off board. However one of the purposes of the board is to share information about products that we have used. I understand that you are in a tough position as a merchant in this case though RonLV. I'm sure after dealing many conversations on the board with Ron that if he has concerns he has taken them up with the company producing the parts. Feedback from the end users is how they find issues and upgrade their components. |

My chain tensioner should not loosen again. I filled the gap in the top of the slotted hole with a piece of a 3/8 bolt and shimmed it with a piece of a size 8 machine screw to get the right tension. The result is that the pressure point on the modified tensioner is in the same place as stock, the top of the slotted hole. Using a stock size bolt as the spacer should put the tension where it belongs, and the tensioner can no loner pivot down under pressure. As the chain loosens I'll just use different size screws to shim the piece of 3/8 bolt until the chain has the desireable amount of freeplay. BUT I'LL STILL TAKE ANY HELP I CAN GET TO MAKE A SWINGARM PROTECTOR!!! I'M BEGGING! |

I got help from Saintly. His methods are very easy. Just PM him. I can post pictures tonight from home, don't have any here at work. I've got it ready to ride, but I live in Denver. It will be a while before I get any miles on it if the weather doesn't change soon. |

Pics of the bolt and screw shoved in the slot to ensure that the adjuster/tensioner does not slip:

Using different size screws or bolts under the 3/8 bolt gives infinite adjustability. Shimming with a size 10 machine screw was too tight, so I used a size 8. It really made a significant difference. My slot is fairly sloppy. I was getting frustrated because I had to do this work after having my engine down for a couple of months and was just ready to ride again. You could do a much cleaner job with more patience. (Message edited by spatten1 on December 28, 2006) |

spatten1 Hal's makes them for the older XB swingarms. They come with their chain conversion kit. Buy a few, consider it consumable. If you have installed a newer style die cast XB swingarm, then just buy one for the XBRR. If you are compelled to make one, then perhaps go to a local plastics retailer, and buy a strip of black UHMW or Nylatron GS. |

spatten1 Give Kevin a call. kdfab.com He built his own chain conversion and had problems with it scratching the swingarm. He built some kind of protecting thing for it and it works and looks great. So far there are no problems with it coming loose or even showing wear. The xb9 has been through a lot this season on the track. this track testing shows the durability of everything on the drummer xb9. check him out |

slotted a chunk of UHMW, hose clamped to swingarm..... 13,000 miles no problems. I suggest that you fashion an "L" bracket out of 1/8" strap , slotted for adjust ment, to connect the tensioner sprocket axle to the swing arm pivot lockbolt. still quick easy adjustment, and it will hold for a thousand miles of hard use. email or pm for details. |
