Some of you may remember my other posts on my 9r's problems. It all started with a failed stator and suprisingly at the same time a big oil leak from the cam cover. Well I replaced the stator, regulator, and removed the cam cover, found the drive gear nut finger tight. I also found the oil pump drive gear shreded. So I replaced the gear, tightened the nut with locktite, and replaced the gasket. Replaced the front isolator mount (worn). Replaced the rocker box and rocker cover gaskets, and primary gaskets.
Not to bad for a bike with 23,000 on the odometer. I was feeling good so I also decided to install a Micron system, with all my new goodies I was anxious to ride. After a test ride I noticed my bonehead move, I left the primary & rocker bolts handtight. Towed it home, replaced the lost primary bolts, refilled the oil, and on to my next test ride, it felt wonderful, Micron growling, haven't ridden in a few months, so I was taking it easy, then.....bzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!
While cruising downhill in fourth, it felt like something snapped and released tension on the motor, the motor shut off and I coasted to a stop, (thinking drivebelt snap) after a quick inspection, belt good, no puddles, didn't see any problems.
So I tried to start it, no fire and it just sounds like theres no compression....at home I took the primary cover off (thinking broken chain) chain looks good primary drive gear intact. Plugs look good, no abnormal signs...

So heres the headscratcher....I turned the motor over a few times and on its compression stroke, it vents out the breather I have for the crankcase vent....what could that mean?

That's not good.

You had the cam cover off, were the cams timed properly properly?

Diablo,
As I took the cover off and one of the cams fell out, not seeing how it went in, I just alingned the marks according to the manual, It started up right away and ran fine, so I didn't bother to time it. Is that bad?

Was the oil pump drive gear just badly worn, or had teeth actually started breaking off? How did you get all the old teeth out of the engine?

There was a lot of metal flakes on my oil plug in the past oil changes....now I know why.

Well, I'll say what everyone is thinking...

you may have a hole in your piston. It sounds like you may have had a valve contact the piston.

This is just a guess based on what is on this thread so do not take it as written in stone.

Well after talking to Al, I performed some more diagnostic tests, and well I found out why no compression, some valves were in the open position because the pinion shaft broke.........

ouch....
wonder if something got caught between the pinion & cam gear to break it off like that or something interfered with the normal operation of one or more of the valves....just speculating.

Do you have the top end apart yet?

Well, I haven't taken the top end apart yet, but I'm thinking that if the valves were open when the piston traveled up, bent valves, or other carnage. I've got to get the motor out of the bike. But now that I know it's not a quick fix, and a lot more work than I wanted to do, I'm not in a hurry, but I wan't to find out how it happened and I'll let you guys know, I'm gonna call Al again and pick his brain and maybe find out what my options are as far as a rebuild, check out the crazy bearing wear on the inner race....does that look normal?

Hey hogs, I'm gonna shop around and decide if I'm gonna replace the crank myself or if I can find an inexpensive/reliable repair shop, but I'm sure my bike won't be on the road anytime soon, but I may take you up on that........thanks

All the Best Dooley, you got a picture end on of the shaft, is it a clean NEW break or Gradual old wearing on the break side?

what about the other end of the shaft as well into the case hows that look and the bushing in there?

I can't really tell if it's a new break or gradual but it looks new, can't see any abnormal wear on the bushing or the other end of the shaft...

No impact gun on assembly, just torqued to specs. Yea I'm thinking that the shaft was probably put in an unusual preload, to cause that kind of wear on the race, I'm not sure if reusing my case would be a good idea for a rebuild....I think I'll want slap in a donor motor.(now I can go to a 12) but still, what sucks is that I just spent a s#$tload of money on the thing, and I'm gonna have to spend more to ride it....It's really the wrong time of year that this happened....

Hogs, the race was made in Canada,that stood up to the abuse, but the pinion shaft doesn't say so who knows were it was made.... : )}
