Hogs, I have read all the above posts and it sounds like your software is only offering Com 1 or Com 3 to choose from. Your laptop is setup on Com 5. You will have to change the Com on your laptop to match the available ports offered on the software.

I have version 2.8.1P. When I select ports in the software and then scroll through the options I am only given Port 1, 3 and USB along with some direct link options.

Hogs, read this link and see if it helps to install com port 1 or 3 on your laptop

Not sure if this is possible in windows 98. But take a look. It's been a few years since I used win 98.

"If you wish to change the COM designation given to a port, go to the Device Manager, select the "Ports" menu, and select the port you want to change. Go to the "Properties" for that port, and select "Port settings." Select "Advanced" and then use the drop-down menu to change the COM number as needed."

Send me an email to sales at americansportbike dot com and I'll send you a file for debugging connection issues with VDSTS. I don't have it here at home.

You may have a bad cable. But you should try all the stuff in the doc before concluding that.

There was a batch of dongles that had marginal drivers in them, and a batch of race ECMs that also had less robust drivers in them. TR updated the firmware in those dongles to fix that issue, but I guess its possible that some are still out there. I sent all the ones I had back to get them reprogrammed.

They symptom was generally flaky connection, not generally no connection at all. But I did have one combination that wouldn't connect at all.

If you still have the stock ECM, throw it in to see if it fixes the problem. But test the stuff in the doc first.

Hogs as a side note. Even if the Dongle firmware is bad. It does not solve the issue of your Laptop and Software not being able to be set to the same com port. This can be done without even being hooked up and has too match before anything else has a chance to work.

i'd use an axe
then get a laptop that works and has a modern operating system
if the cd doesn't work, do you know why?
maybe a hardware issue
do you have someone near by that you could use their laptop to eliminate the idea of a bad laptop?

No don't take the axe to the laptop. It's still perfectly usable as a door stop.

I'd be looking for a newer laptop or upgrading the operating system of the current one.

I guess I'd be of better help if I was even a little bit computer savvy but it's a challenge for me just to get this thing to turn on some times.

But the fact that it doesn't work on any bike has me thinking that it's "probably" the computer.

Just to be on the safe side, I like Glitch's idea of trying it out on a different laptop before doing anything rash (or anything that ends in a general *bang*, *crash*, or *boom*)

If I lived closer I would fix it for you sorry guy. I do believe it's just a Com port Conflict.

Good luck.

Hey Xbswede,
You may be 100 percent correct I have no ideal still...

anyways someone tell me IF A buddy of mine has say the Direct Link pkg. Could I borrow his cable and use it with the VDSTS Standard software and see if I could then hook up???
Are the cables for direct Link and the Standard VDSTS 100 percent the same just the software being Different??

Thanks

The cables are NOT the same according to TR. VDSTS SW security is entirely from the dongle, DL is a combination of the key and dongle.

I haven't tried it, but I don't think it works.

I think you have a bad cable. It happens. TR will replace it for you, contact them. But trying a different PC at this point is your best bet prior to sending it back.
