This is just to get you by until someone with definite knowledge chimes in:

It depends on which Drummer you're getting.

If it's the original Drummer a race ecm will do just fine.
You could reflash the stock ecm with direct link & get a servo emulator to trick the ecm into believing the exhaust valve was still intact but it would probably cost the same or more than simply getting the race ecm.
Same for the SS Drummer as well I think.

If it's a Loud Drummer, I believe Kevin once said the techlusion TFI was needed.

If it's an Econo Drummer, I'm pretty sure it uses the stock ecm as the exhaust valve is still used.

The 984cc equipped bikes do not have the interactive exhaust, only the 12s and I don't think all of them have it(specs on the mothersite don't have it on the Lightning Long 12Ss).

The original Drummer and race ECM match very nicely. Check out the exhaust shootout American Sportbike did.

The Long does have the exhaust servo motor.

Aatch - Call Kevin. He'll tell you that he designed the pipe to work with the race ECM. Coincidentally we did a lot of real world testing on my 12 this summer with the stock ECM. I used the stocker all summer and it worked fine for my '06 XB12Ss. After the learning period I really couldn't tell the difference.

Oops, I read 9Sx but for some reason my eyes saw 12S. I gotta be more careful when I read this board late at night.
Disregard all I said about exhaust servos since it doesn't apply here : )

Anyhoo, let us know which Drummer you're getting. Inquiring minds want to know: )

well, i removed my stock muffler last weekend, so now it's just sitting in a box in the basement (this is portland, oregon, and it rains A LOT here in the winter - so it's not like i'm really losing out on good ride time) ready to get shipped off to KDFAB - but i still have to call Kevin and actually order the thing....just haven;t gotten around to it yet. but i'll be getting the original drummer - most likely running it with stock ecm and filter for a while, although i might get the race ecm and filter sooner rather than later. seems if i'm dropping the $400 on the drummer, another $250 or so for ecm and filter seems worthwhile to REALLY take advantage of the hardware i'm buying...i'll for sure be posting on here to let everyone know what i end up doing, and how easy/difficult the install will be. removal of my old muffler was super easy, and it seems pretty straightforward to bolt a new one on. stay tuned

Let me know how the stock ECM works. I am currently on the waiting list for the Drummer SS. After talking with Kevin I have decided against ordering the Race ECM until after the learning curve of the stock ECM to see how it runs.

It's going to run a little lean. When you get the muffler on there and you hear "popping" during deccel that means it's either 1) not sealed or 2) running lean. I'd suggest putting DL on your bike. You're going to want it at some point anyway (trust me, I have a race ECM) so might as well save some money and get it now. If I'm not mistaken, you can get it pre-mapped. It won't be EXACTLY perfect, but I'll be closer than the ECM.

Edit: And if you've got the time/money, you can take the bike to a shop with a dyno and they can get the bike just right...

I've been running the stock ecm for all summer and mine doesn't run lean, same 02 sensor telling the ecm what it wants....buy what your budget fits....

I made my own ram-air for the race bike and now I use the TFI to fuel the WOT but 4 races prior to that, 103 octane fuel stock ecm and airfilter, 02 sensor meter says a constant 13-13.5 to 1 AFR, you have to remember I'm not setting the bike up to run in the dyno room, I want it to run outside in the real world and these are the things that I'm doing to my bike....I know at Road Atlanta there were only 4 bikes faster than ours in the National Class we ran which was Heavyweighttwins SS and that info has to be worth something, we're racing against water-cooled 1000 twins and are very competitive.....
