I don't have the Firebolt yet, but I know that after frame sliders / swingarm spools that the OEM exhaust is getting replaced.
I know that it's a very subjective thing, but I don't want a loud exhaust. I live in the city and I'm not a "Loud pipes save lives" believer. Supertrapps are not an option.

Thanks

Every other exhaust is going to be louder than stock. Read the Exhaust Shootout at American Sport Bike and you can listen to soundbites of various exhaust systems.

Drummer is a fine product, but the report will let you compare actual audio to find what you want.

Are you talking muffler or complete exhaust system?
Either will be louder than stock.

I have an XB12SS that came with the race kit. It's LOUD. Unless you're talking about performance gains, I don't see what's not to like about the stock exhaust. It is quiet at low speeds, and I think it sounds sweet when you get the revs up. Plus, I don't see where aftermarket systems add anything at all aesthetically.

The race kit is quiet in comparison to the Drummer/Odie pipes. The micron is my fav. and I dont like LOUD pipes.

Rasta....have you ever heard a race muffler drive by. I was worried about it being too loud also until I had a tps reset at the dealer and as the tech came back from the test ride I could not believe how quiet it actually was.

I think the reason it sounds so loud is that the sound reflects right off the pavement and back into the helmet.

The race exhaust is super quiet compared to most after market exhausts....It just doesn't sound that way on riding on the bike.

I ride with a couple of harley guys from time to time and could not hear my bike over theirs.

Is that your idea of a "performance exhaust"?

I spent some time looking at the dyno curves on the American Sport Bike tests ( Thanks for the link ) and the race kit looks like a winner among the units tested.

The stock exhaust sounded more like a Murray lawn tractor than a high perf street bike.

Nemo, exhaust means nothing if you cant ride the balls of of it. Get some gear and hit the track. Depending on which model you speak of you will get a number of opinions on which exhaust. Experience here with a nine and 3 different exhausts I now have gone back to a Drummer... Micron is the next test mule. Till then.................

Pmpski_1,
I had to wear earplugs when riding my Latus equipped XB9S.
I still found the bike too loud.
I fabricated baffles to fit the two exhaust outlets - much better now and it gets better gas mileage as an added benefit.
It still has more power than I will ever need.--Even seems to have gained power in the lower rev. band.

I run the race exhaust and find it a happy medium between a reasonable sound level and the best peformance out of what is currently available according to the American Sport Bike test. You can still find them on ebay. That's where I found mine.

I will probably run the Drummer SS after the race muffler craps out. I have had people tell me to only expect about 10,000 miles out of that muffler, but I'm not sure what that means. What does a muffler do when it's worn out? Clog?

I have the gear, been to the track, and run my poor little Z1000 pretty hard. There are a bunch of people faster than me, but I make progress with every track day.

Knowing that, I would say give Kevin a call. I think he made a Drummer at one time that wasnt too loud and had same performance. The Drummer in my opinion isn't loud anyway it has a nice deep rumble.

Cptnemo - the race pipe is only the clear winner if you think 5000 - 6500 RPM is all you are going to use. I think most of the other offerings perform much better in the range that most of us ride. Look at the curves carefully and you will start to see how strong the other pipes are. The race kit pipe might be the right one for you, but for me there are stronger pipes in the mid-range that have more to offer.

I second what Lost_in_ohio said. Same exact thing happened to me. Tech came back with my race pipe equipted bike after tps reset test ride & my jaw dropped when I couldn't hear my bike until it got close to me.

Now that I know that the race pipe isn't anywhere near as loud as I thought it was I'm thinking about saving up & getting a Drummer this Summer. The only thing that stopped me from getting one last year was fear of it being too loud but now I know it'll be fine & it has such a nicer, deeper sound compared to the race pipe (from what I gathered listening to sound files). Another plus of the Drummer is that the power will be lower in the rev range where I ride 75% of the time instead of up high where I visit 25% of the time.

The drummer is a GREAT pipe....I think more so than a the race pipe. I've ran them both on my 9.

I have a race kit pipe and Race ECM I am going to sell. Had it on for 1000-miles, but proved too loud for me and I didn't like the torque dip since it was right in the middle of where I rode. So off it came, and back on went the stocker. PM me if there are any of you out there that need XB9 stuff.

What I think is funny is how much this gets discussed.

The only pipe in the shootout that makes more peak horsepower at the wheel than the Race Kit is the Micron.

For the price of that pipe, you get the entire race kit with change left over.

As far as power, and torque dips, I personally don't know what the big deal is about 2 or 3 horsepower or a few pounds of torque here or there. Once you get out of first gear, a torque dip in the mid range is fairly meaningless. Keep the rev's up.

It's nit-picking at it's nit-pickiest, but then, to each his own. I don't race or do track days so the minutia doesn't really bother me. I suppose the track fanatics will notice these things, but I ride the street and it doesn't affect me in the least.

I am not a revver and I could actually feel the torque dip on the street. But, going back to stop I am pretty happy. Sounds good at WOT, but could have a better sound at idle and cruising.

Sean,

I test rode a few 2006 Buells at the IMS this weekend, and I must say that the power delivery on the stock bikes is very, very good. Living in HB as you do, quiet might be the best way to go.

I was riding the hell out of an XB12SCG, left the demo group behind and went my own way... MAN that bike delivered everything I wanted from it, and I found myself not caring at all how quiet it was.

Do what's best for you man. I still say all the talk of torque dips and mucking about over 3 HP here and there is sort of futile.
