Greetings, Well I just finished upgrading and replacing parts on my XB9R. I replaced the: stator, oil pump drive gear,starter,front isolator and required gaskets. Upgraded to a Micron system. Even Polished the rocker boxes and front motor mount(since they were off and the frame is also polished). after I bolted it all in place, checked and rechecked, toped it off with fluids, then unplugged the coil and cranked it a few times to get the oil circulating, plugged the coil back in, started it and it ran great for a few minutes then I could hear a distant tick that got louder and louder, I shut off the motor. It definately came from the front valvetrain. I started it again, still a loud tick tick tick. So I shut it off and here I am, I wanted to ask the experts.... It sounds like an oil starvation problem but how can I trouble shoot, is there a way too pre-oil the motor, the oil light is not on while running. I really don't want to take it back apart, the rocker assemblies were a PITA.....what do you think??? | ||

The lifters will take some time to pump up. Let it run and get good and warm, get all the juices flowing. Or... You didn't accidentally swap intake with exhaust pushrods did you? | ||

An exhaust leak at the cylinderhead will sound like a metallic 'tick'. Sometimes I have to retorque the header nuts a few times to get the exhaust gaskets to seat and seal. When I start my bike after having the engine apart, there is usually a cacaphony of clicks and ticks until all the parts learn how to play nice with each other again. | ||

When I replaced my lifters they soaked in oil for 2 weeks, installed them with my new timing cover, gaskets, etc... The motor sounded like it was gonna self destruct for the whole warm up, plus about 2 miles down the road. I was hearing a lot of noise for the next couple of rides but was ok after that. Now i got 1500 miles on her and it will pull the front tire to the balance point sitting down in third gear!!! | ||

No blake I didn't take the pushrods out, just releive pressure on them to get the cam out. Okay I'll let it run longer...I was just scared of causing more damage...do you guys thing I may have to bleed the oil system? .......thanks for the replies | ||

I replaced the oil pump on my XLH1200 and had a similar issue which turned out to be a cavitation in the oil lines due to excess air..I bleed it and the noise stopped after it was good and warm. Could be way off here but, my two cents... |
