Just a thought... is it possible that pushrod didn't get seated into rocker arm socket completely? Such that piston is hitting valve that is open too far?

I thought the same thing but I still want to know the results of the battery test.

hey guys, I didn't get a chance to investigate too much, but I was able to check a couple of things. First, I took out the spark plug from the front cylinder (couldn't get to the rear plug) and tried turning the rear wheel with the bike in 5th gear. The wheel turned fine until I started getting compression in the rear cylinder. Good sign, right? Unfortunately, my battery charger is a POS so the meter on it doesn't tell me anything of value. Still, after charging the battery for about a half hour, the first couple of attempts seemed more promising. I'm going to try leaving the battery on the charger longer and see what that does. It looks like it may be the battery after all. The bike sat for about 3 months waiting to be fixed so I suppose that might have been the end of it. I'll get back to you with some better results of the battery test.

Thanks again for the input. You guys are keeping me going!

Invest in a Battery Tender or other trickle charger. It will recover a lost battery and it will tell you when the battery is at 100% of charge -- it will save you money! Standard chargers overcook and destroy batteries. Typically a 2a-h charger will take about 8 hours to charge a disharged battery -- charge rates are in the manual. But get a trickle charger and you'll have no worries.

Glad to hear you'll be back on the road soon!

Get a Battery Tender Plus, it will be the best $35 you could spend.

I put a multimeter on the battery this morning and it read 12.25 volts. Does that tell us enough to determine if it's the battery? It doesn't seem like it would. When I put the charger on it on the fast charge (6 amp) setting, the charger's needle went from 0% to 100% in about 1 minute. On the 2 amp setting, it took about 15 minutes. It seems like maybe the battery is just not holding much of a charge. Forgive my ignorance on the topic, but isn't it possible that the battery could test to 12.25 volts, but still not hold enough charge to crank the motor? I guess I'm still not entirely clear on the whole volts/amps thing!

Mookdizzel what it is!

Ep,
Is it a constant 12.25 or is the voltage slowly dropping?

Is that the reading with the power cables attached or off the battery?

I'll have to check it again when I get home to see if that level is dropping. That was without the charger hooked up, but with the bike's cables connected to the battery.

monitor the voltage as you try to crank it, and see how far it may drop, if it falls below 11 volts or so, the battery is probably not holding a charge very good.

A good, fully charged battery will be close to 13v (12.8 maybe more hot off the charger). Put jumper cables on the bike to start it to prove to yourself you have a bad battery and end this thread, geeese

Well, you guys were right. It's the battery. Thanks for your help in figuring it out and sorry if I violated some sort of limit on the number of questions one is allowed to ask!

One last question... Is there an HD or other model that uses the same battery or will I have to order one through a Buell dealer?

erik,

glad to hear, as far as most of us are concerned, ask away, only the weak minded whiners worry about too many questions being asked. always better to be safe, than sorry!

I guess I just like to ask a lot of questions so I'm as clear on any one point as I can be. Fortunately, most of the folks here don't seem to mind answering even the dumbest of questions. I seem to have plenty of those!

I believe the same battery as the one for the VROD is the same one for your bike...that is the one I got and it fit/works perfect.
