I have a 2005 XB12Scg w/about 3000 miles on it. The factory warranty expires in Jan. I've been thinking about adding the extended warranty...perhaps even for the 5 year (which is actually 3 additional).

Is it worth it (especially considering I put only about 1500 miles a year on the bike)?Your thoughts, advice is appreciated.

Depends on your budget and what value you put on "peace of mind"
Example, if $ is tight each month, as it is with most of us, would a 1500.00 repair ruin your riding season getting the money together to pay for the repairs?
With the ESP plan, you would pay 50.00 and be on your way.

How mechanical are you? Can you do major repairs yourself or would you need to rely and pay the dealer to do them?

I have seen ESPs go both ways, some people buy them and never use it,their bike doesn't break. They may as well of tossed the money away.
Others have paid for the ESP and had it pay more, sometimes way more than the purchase price.

An ESP is an insurance plan, it's like health insurance for your bike.
You pay your dollar, or not and take your chances.

Just so you know,
a 5 year(3 additional years) should cost you 1149.00
that includes the additional 150.00 for not purchasing the ESP when the bike was new.

Definitely not worth it if you only put 1500 miles on a year. Mine runs out in May and I am still thinking of getting the ESP since I do about 15k a year. To me it would be only worth it if the trans or motor blows. Everything else would be much more faster and cheaper to fix it myself. What else would cost over $1000 in parts?

What Dave said.

Also - you are responsible to pay for diagnostics, you can be referred to the selling dealer to have the contract honored, and ESP can send an inspector prior to authorizing work - this will delay repair a day or two.

Performance work can void ESP's obligation to pay for claims.

ESP is ok. There are other companies with similar products and they are not worth considdering, much more cost and much less benefit.

$1149 doesn't sound too bad if you put many miles on. I just had the front rotor, main drive seal and cooling fan replaced under wrnty. I didn't see the bill but I would guess it was getting close to $1000.

I bought my '03 slightly used from a dealer and got the ESP for $800. This year alone, I've had my cases taken apart twice, a stator and a regulator replaced. Last year was the front isolator and a main shaft sprocket. If I had to pay for all that, I would not be riding it today. I always buy the extended warranty for 1st year anythings. Like my 03 Honda Element & 03 Buell, but I probably won't when I get my next Buell. They should have all that stuff worked out by now. That said, I've already got 70k on my Element and 24k on my Buell. I still can't figure out where the hell I go, as I only have a 4 mile commute!
