Tried searching for discussions on this and didn't find a lot of definitive ideas. I rode my XB in the rain for the first time (haven't had it that long) the other night, and got the back of my jacket plastered with grime from the rear wheel (I have the cheese grater in place). What are other folks solutions to this? I have thought about covering up the holes in the cheese grater, but don't expect much from that. The extended carbon fiber fender that Al sells doesn't look long enough (and expensive), but it seems that some type of greatly extended hugger fender is the answer without looking like crap. Is there some standard fix I don't know about? Keith | ||

Keith, I was looking at the new XB it has an extended fender, its the same as the long I just noticed it looking at the TT. I think I might see what the cost is. Leo | ||

I was going to suggest the Extended Rear Fender from American Sport Bike but they don't have one for the '06 and '07 models yet. According to Al it is in the works but you'd have to ask him when it might be available. Beyond that I don't know of any other answer. | ||

American Sport Bike sells a carbon fiber cheese grater insert that'll block the holes.  That should help some. | ||

How about instead of putting stuff on your bike that might spoil the"LOOK" you want. Carry a light weight rain jacket(roll-up) when you think you might get caught on a wet road.(just a thought)...Charlie | ||

Yeah, I carry one in the tail pack. I used to carry it in the back pocket of my jacket, but sometimes that bugged me. These jackets are tiny. Plus, you can just go home, shake it off or I've even used it to cover my seat or cluster if I'm at work. Double duty. Mark | ||

Keith (Khollister), Check out the thread Lightning + rain = wet back. I was concerned about the same thing before I bought my lightning. I've decided to block the holes with duck tape until I find something better. This seems to be an improvement. If you like the looks of the carbon fiber cheese grater insert then you can do the same to see if that will be enough for you. | ||

On the other hand............... You could install the factory "R" , or "Rain" tail. This unit comes stock on the Firebolt.  Here is a "Rain Tail" installed on my XB12 S. Works like charm in the wet. | ||

My Firebolt came with a "raintail" also, but I always thought that if I put a Lightning seat/tail on it, I would chop the cheese grater and add someting like this:  Maybe somebody could fab one up and give it a try! Greetings, I'm in the same boat. I need a real solution for water up the back. I Line-Xed my cheese grater thinking that would do the trick and it hasen't helped at all. I then added a "mud flap" (actually it's from a KTM Duke. KTM calls it a number plate) It doesen't work either. I need the BMW thing over the rear tire I guess.  | ||

I believe the "BMW thingy" referred to is the little fender section attached to the swingarm shown in the F-650 photo Buellerthanyou posted. All of the BMW dual-sport bikes (either 650 or 1200) have some form of this to catch the rooster tail that comes off the rear tire. The mudguard that Disturbed posted probably works OK & is cheap, but I believe an earlier thread identified it as an International-only part. Guess I need to call Dave & see if he can get it. | ||

Yeah, the mud is like a badge of honor compared to that. Plus, I can only imagine what that looks like from the rear. Yuk. I would have left that part AT the dealership right on the receptionists desk with a note to Erik attached to it. mark | ||

Has anyone here actually used the m0549.1ad fender? Was it actually effective at keeping the back of your jacket dry? I really like my 9, but I hate my back getting wet when my front is still dry. It is the only bike I've ever owned which gives me a soaking after the rain has stopped. |
