The key chain thread over in the general forum got me thinking. Is there another key type that will fit the xb ignition?

I do not like how the buell key hangs from my key chain. With its blue rubber base it is a little unwieldy.

Is there another key type that fits? Who else uses this type of ignition?

I like the barrel keys, I wonder if the ignition can be changed to accept one of those?

I took the rubber off my keys. My local locksmith makes me copies from volvo blanks.

you can get a harley type barrel ignition on ebay. id like to put one of those on my buell so i wouldnt have to turn the key every time i started it up or shut it off. how hard is it to wire one of those up?

Xbob.... I know this is gonna' sound smart-asses, but I swear it's not intended that way.

Isn't that just a wee-bit...um, LAZY? It's not like it's a very strenuous task! Lookin' to put one of those in your car too?

You still have to turn the ignition switch on and off on a Harley. The key just locks/unlocks it.

If I remember correctly Moto Guzzi does or at least did use the same key configuration (also made by zadi), that was just black...

Do a search on ebay. They have several different key blanks available for the Buell. Same as Aprilla I think. Thats where I got my spares.

I would like to have a switch like my Harley as well. Not just because I am lazy, but because I would like to keep my key on my key ring and not have to let it dangle in the switch while riding.

If memory serves correct some Ducati keys are also the same type. Again made by zadi.

Good day

My local lock smith cuts keys for 2003 xb9r. He uses a BMW key. Then tries the key himself and makes final adjustments to it. Works fine. I did order a set of Buell keys from my local hog/buell dealership. They just needed my VIN. Took about five days. Keys arrived already key. Works fine.

I use keys made from SILICA for Italian bikes. Got two blanks off of Ebay for $10. Sorry for the terrible picture but there is a hole for the key ring, it is sort of visible in the second pic. The plastic is also a blue similar to the Buell key.
The model number is: ZD23RCP, it is on the other side of the plasitc.

10.00 plus how much shipping off ebay?
Then how much did it cost you to have them cut?
Didn't we just go over this about a month ago?

You guys must go thru a lot of keys to make it worth the effort to find cheaper alternatives.
I still have the original keys to my 1982 FXWG that I have owned since 85?

What is happening to all your keys that you need more than 2?

New, factory Buell keys are like 20.00
Already cut for the bike, all you need is a VIN and a Buell dealer and 5 days or so to wait.

I guess I just don't get it?

To me it's like the posts about oil filters.
WHHHHOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOO! I can save 3.00 per filter so I get to save 10.00 per year!

Now a bike like Ronlv, that is a cool idea to mount it there. His bike is really tricked out.

Corporatemonkey
I agree the stock keys are kind of big.
I just keep mine on it's own key ring

LOST KEYS?

The Little Kid called me last night about 9:30pm from his girlfriends house!

He broke the key off in the ignition on his Barbie Car! The hard part was finding one of the 4 spare keys I had made up for him this summer! What a PIA! Then he acts like it my fault!

is that 20 each or 20 a piece?? Wooo Hooo, I saved! Shipping is dependent on the seller, duh!, I got one of the keys cut for free because the guy wasnt sure he did it right (which he did). Oh and I think the first post was referring to an alternate style key because the stock key just didnt tick his fancy.hehe WOOOO HOOOO I SAVED.
No snap intended DaveS, Im just one happy camper. Plus the key looks cool IMO because it says Italy on it.

I dislike having the weight of the keys tugging o9n the ignition switch all the time.

Then with two seperate keys, the one for the tank is always rubbing on the forks.

SO I'm going to strip the plastic off of both, and bolt the two together, so they wont jangle around, and be more compact in my pocket.

i not only modified my ignition to a after market round key ignition under the seat, but i also modified the key

i can now turn the bike on and then put the keys in my pocket, the key doesnt need to stay in the ignition

I prefer a black key on my Buell, black rubber on keys gives to the XB9 at least 3 HP on rear wheel...

here's my Silca:

For those wanting to know about the volvo key.

Im not sure exactly what kinda of volvo key.

I will take a pic, and post soon.

It cost me like $2.50 for the key. Locksmith said mine was on of the hardest to match. It took him like 30 minutes. He came out of the back of his shop with the key. I put in the bolt and works fine.

He said it was a type of volvo blank.
