Put regular oil in my tranny so the mobil1 gear oil doesn't eat my stator.
The heavier the better I'm assuming.
So putting a quart of 20w50 royal purple isn't going to grenade anything?
No missed shift every other try?

You should have no problems with 20W50.
That's what the dealer put in my bike.(Harley Synthetic)
My bike works fine.

Yes, the dealer put the same oil in the transmission. (2003 XB9S)
In the new bikes with the reduced effort clutches they are using the special trans fluid to give the clutches better grab.

Sweet now HOPEFULLY after I change it out I wont get the GOD AWFUL gear oil smell every time I shut it down.
That and hopefully my stator wont die on me.

I don't understand why this keeps coming up.

Is there REALLY an incremental benefit over the Formula+?

For the 2003 XB9S/R, I can see using the same as that is what is called for. For the others, I think there is simply too much risk of damage due to the unknown to chance it.

Do you really distrust the Formula+ that much?

I just don't get it.

I also run 20-50 in engine and tranny. I've used Amsoil and M1 with no problems. Bike shifts MUCH better than gear oil.

The bikes that call for the Formula+, of course, should stick with that.

I understand about the 2003s. Manuf. recommends the same oil in both holes.

I also understand not wanting to go to the HD dealer.

It just seems that there is quite a bit of anecdotal evidence regarding stators, etc. having issues with other gear oils and crank case oils.

Syn-3 or Formula + in the primary case. Either way, you won't have any problems. Put Mobil 1 in there and pay the price.

The only lube that seemed to cause problems was the gear lube, not the oil.

It is my understanding that the gear lube contains sulphur which creates an acid that causes the problem.

I read all of the oil posts. The Mobil 1 has created some issues as well.

It was the Mobil 1 "gear" oil though... The 75/90 stuff specifically.

I believe the Amsoil gear oil will cause the same problem as well. It smells just like the M1 stuff anyway...

The tranny only holds 1 qt, why don't you just go to the harley shop, and buy 4-5 qts of the formula+, that ought to hold you off for 15-25 thousand miles. Then you can get your oil anywhere,

No thanks.
I put a quart of royal purple in there.
They claim it increase hp/tq, now I know that putting it in the tranny wont give any but I also know when I first started using the oil and gear oil,
I could DEFINETLY feel the difference.
Bike seemed to spin up faster and just felt like it pulled harder than with the Amsoil I replaced.

I run the Synthetic in both. I haven't noticed a thing. Good or bad.

Mobil 1 75/90 was the accepted standard for years -- Buells and Sporties. History now tells us that it has probably been executing some stators before their time. I haven't seen this personally and I still have the M2 loaded with it,,,,,I'll probably run Formula+ next go round.

Formula + is 6.25 thru me.
Syn 3 is 8.95
How much is a qt of Royal Purple? I am asking, as I do not know.
While I agree it is not wise to have me ship one qt at a time, many of my customers stock up.

It's 9 sumthin but worth every penny.
Went on my usual strafing run today and it was weird, before at 80/90mph AS SOON as you let off the gas you started slowing (flywheel effect or sumthin) so much so that I barely ever had to use my brakes.
Today I found myself going in WAY TOO HOT 3 or 4 times before I realised what happened.
It seems the royal purple made the flywheel effect almost non exsistant.
I know ppl will chime in saying I'm crazy n blabla but spend the 40$ for the oil for the primary and the tranny and you WILL feel the difference.

I don't quite understand this, but WHY do people put GL-5 gear oil in their bikes when NO manufacturer recommends it? Do you put deisel or alcohol in the gas tank because they're all fuels? So why would you do the same with GL-5???

Every oil manufacturer is recommending motor oil in the XL and XB engine/tranny... don't put GL-5 gear oil in the tranny.

Let's repeat - don't put GL-5 oil in your tranny. Doesn't matter who makes it, don't do it. End of story.

I think he is putting the Royal Purple 20/50 crankcase oil into the trans. He should be fine since it's an 03.

From 04 further, the manuf. recommends Formula+.

Is HD trying to sell more crappy oil at a premium price? Maybe.

Is there something contained in the Formula+ that is good for the trannys or is there something contained in the other oils that is bad for the tranny? Jury's still out.

I am ok with the shifting of my bike. Could it be better with something else? Maybe. I just don't want to take the chance of cooking something by using something else.

You wanna? I have no problem with that. I hope you have a long and happy life with your "better-shifting-than-my-bike" bike with no issues or problems.

Besides, a trip to my dealer give me a chance to tell them how happy I am with them and how glad I am that they are a great dealership.

What does this get me? I get in when I call, and I get the bike out same day. It's fixed right the first time. They also see me dropping dollars in their dealership. Even if it's just $9 for a quart of Formula+, it makes a difference.

I too switched from M1 gear lube to Formula+ for the tranny just to eliminate potential issue.
The shifting effort is exactly the same before and after.

why are so many people saying Formula + is expensive? It's like $6 everywhere I've ever seen it.

And so what if it was expensive? How much is your engine worth to you? Do you drink bottled water or tap water?
