I have used the following in my primary:
H-D Syn3 20w-50
Mobil1 V-twin 20w-50
Amsoil 20w-50HD
H-D Formula+

The latest is Formula+ and I have to say my transmission is shifting very well. It is much smoother and finding neutral is an absolute breeze. Even my roommate commented that it was the easiest bike he's ever ridden to find neutral on. I recommend it to all Buell riders that come into my dealership.

Formula + was released for a reason. It is a good choice (note, a better choice) than sport-trans was.

I don't think that H-D oil is the only thing that can be put in an H-D or Buell bike. Do you really think H-D makes ANY of their branded oil? C'mon now...

I've never used Royal Purple in a bike, but it works great in my Rx-7 (also 20w-50).

H-D makes up their own oil standards, so it is hard to compare ratings without independent oil analysis on the same bike operated under the same conditions.

Any major oil brand will put out a good product, but remember, gear oil wasn't originally made for use with electronics submersed. Formula+ is.

Daves,
Formula+ was introduced after Buell changed their clutch to the lower effort configuration.
I, maybe incorrectly, thought that the change was due to the lower effort clutch.
The need to give the clutch better bite because of a weaker spring.
Did Buell give you any information as to the difference between the Syn and the Formula+.
Would the formula+ be recommended now for the previous bikes, like my 03 XB9S.
At my recent change the dealer still installed the Syn.

Ive run formula + in mine since ive had it, it was recommended to me at my local HD/Buell dealer,I dont have anything to compare it with, though, I doubt any 80-140 gear oil would do better. That stuff is like glue. Thats why you see drag race cars putting their rears on jackstands and running their cars before each round, just too get it thin enough to flow. Probably frees up 1-2 hp. Why dont someone who has access to a dyno,test it and post the results. And being that i work for an Auto Electric Company, i can verify that some of it doesn't do to well when used with electronics. Burns up the electronics, really depends on the design of the system, some do and some don't matter. It seems on the Buells, the sulpher affects the stators, so i would shy away from it.

I change my oil and primary BOTH every 2500 miles, give or take 500 miles. So yeah, it costs me a few extra bucks.

It is a small price to pay for peace of mind. I'll always help out a brother with a failed stator in a pinch!

I notice a difference between Syn3 and Formula+ in the primary. Both times that I've run Syn3, I've had to consciously make an effort to get a smooth clutch release (mostly when it's warmer out). I've never noticed that with the Formula+.

Yes but not because I think it's safer or anything like that. Tap water just smells funny and leaves my mouth dry, so it's merely a preference. But I don't mind paying for it, and that was the point of my question.

I like Arrowhead and Crystal Geyser. And Albertson's almost always has one of them on sale, like $3.99 for 24 of the .5 liter bottles.

Back to the TOPIC,

Syn3 is never on sale. It's always between $8-$11 per quart, and you know what, that's fine by me. Sure, I wish it was cheaper... I also wish there were 6 gears in my transmission. Can't get everything you want.
