i took my 05 xb9r into the dealership because i was fowling plugs and smoking a little...turns out as i suspected my valve seals are bad.(underwarenty) bike has 8000 miles..the service rep at ft washington harley davidson says that harley has come out with a new design to replace the last year and a half of valve seals....guess this is not an uncomon thing. also i have an aftermarket race computer and they said that my number 1 spark plug is running way to hot.. and the rear plug is running to cold..they are still working that issue.

They replaced mine as well, in doing so they damaged my rear cylinder causing a leak. The second time around seems okay but I have still burned over one quart of oil within two thousand miles. I will be complaining at my 10,000 mile service cause I dont think is should have to add ANY oil between scheduled maintenance.

wait a second, now, I have an 05 xb9r, is this something that i should be concerned with or about? And if so, what am I looking for. Cause my bike smokes only just a little bit after I start it and even after it has warmed up when I rev the throttle.

Keep me informed, please.

mine have gone bad twice. first time at 4500 miles second time at 9000 miles. notice a pattern here? they told me that they had problems with the 05 valve seals and that the updated ones are orange. they put them in this time. i will see what happens at 13500 miles.....

I changed my spark plugs the other day on my 2004 XB12R and it couldn't be burning any better or evenly. I've got the Buell full race kit package and had it dyno tuned right after the install was done. That air/fuel ratio line is about near as perfect as one could get it..... Right out of the box. Buell did a awesome job with their race kit package, too bad its no longer on the market.

Is there a recall or service bulletin on 2005 models for bad valve seals? I know someone with a 05 with only 3k on it and don't want them to run into issues later on down the road when the warranty has lapsed.

if you have an 05 i would take it in wile its on warrenty and tell em you want the new valve seals.

i bought this bike from a previous owner a couple months ago. How do i find out if it's still under warranty?

Would the dealer be able to look it up by vin?

first off there was a small problem with valve seals not seating right on big twins, H-D switched to the 7mm valves that year (05). the problem was on some bikes due to how the bike was broke-in. Buell has had the 7mm for years now and has never had a problem nor have I seen a trend. relax everyone it's H-D big twins not Buells or XL's.

well i am just telling you that i was told by the dealer it has also been a problem on the buells...not i really dont give a crap if it is a trend or not ..i was just passing the info..my bikes under warrenty therfore i dont care..they are fixing it

Got tow 05 models here past that mileage , No plms. with any valve seals...

If they are doing valve guides ask that your cylinders are honed and that you get new rings too. HD/Buell warranty can considder these wear items around 8,000 to 10,000 miles, and up, so the dealership may ask you to pay a little.

HD/Buell considders 1 quart of oil per 1,000 miles to be acceptable. It is not realistic to expect that these motors will not use any oil.

Yeah, I called my HD shop and he told me the same thing that it was the big twins not the Sportster motors.

But, I can say that he would like me to bring it in anyways and check it out just to make sure.

Not bad.. He actually volunteered that I bring my bike in since it's on warranty to ensure that threre aren't any problems. That was a shocker. So, it's goin in either way.

We'll see what happens and keep ya posted.

just got a call from the dealer turns out the other reason i was fouling plugs so bad was that the wires going to my o2 sensor were grounding out to the frame...they said between that and the valve seals they cant beleive the bike was running as good as it was...they said it should open the bike up quite a bit now...i am excited..the new o2 sensor comes in next week

SO, I dont get it. Was it runnin like crap? I mean other than the smokin? And was it just smokin a bit or did you look like a cartoon riding down the road with a chimney attached to your bike?

Obviously it had nothing to do with your valve guide oil seals.

THAT'S WHAT YOUR DEALER SHOULD HAVE TOLD YOU.

no i was running fine i was just having a puff of smoke every now and then and it seemed like it was running to rich...

and rocket man can you not read..the valve seals were also bad.

Sorry for trying to offer you sage advice so's your dealer / tech doesn't blind you with bullshit. Shot valve guide oil seals or not, that will NEVER cause your plugs to foul.

My S1W with Dick O'Brien flowed heads DOESN'T HAVE ANY VALVE SEALS INSTALLED (and there's not much valve guide in there either) and it NEVER FOULS PLUGS.

i have an 04 xb12s that just had new valve seals put in it last wk. i had the 20,000 mile service performed the wk of oct 18. bike was running rough then but i thought it was bad gas. turns out it was the valve seals. the dealer replaced both base gaskets and valve seal in both cylinders under the extended warranty. only cost me 50.00. bike runs better than it has in a long time.i have the loud drummer and it is tuned with a direct link. according to the dealers dyno it has 97hp at the real wheel. the numbers are from about 5,000 miles ago.

I have an 04 12s. I bought it with 3k on it. I just turned 5k this weekend and have put 1 3/4 qts. of oil in it since then. It runs good and I have not seen any smoke. It is still under warranty. Do I have a problem?

maybe I'm confused here, but unless they are remapping your ECM with DirectLink there is nothing to "tune". The ECM will adjust fuel delivery for the current conditions as you ride based on the various sensors on the bike (temp, O2 sensor, etc) but the fuel maps are hard-coded in the ECM unless you re-flash them with an aftermarket tool.
There's no real tuning possible with the race kit, it's plug and play.
