first one went out at 10k miles under warranty but if the next one goes out at 10k again I'll need to pay for that one. how much do these fans cost? wonder if the motor alone could be replaced ? | ||

I wonder if you can remove the motor? If so I am sure you can get a new motor at RadioShack FARRRR cheaper than a whole unit from Buell... | ||

all the ones I see on ebay have miles on them like 7-9,000 miles if mine went out at 9,800 I think only new would do. if I see a new one I'll bid on it though. I'm going to see if I can get the old one back and try and take it appart but if warranty is like automotive warranty work they probly need to keep the old part | ||

I bet the air temperature at the fan is well over 300 deg | ||

The fan needs to be relocated. It is exposed to extreme temperatures and the result is a short life. The left side air scoop should be redesigned to accept a two blade fan which would windmill freely when air is passing over it and activate when the head temp goes up or the bike stops. The fan would live longer in that setting. | ||

all of those fans on ebay are used though. with thousands of miles on them. mine has almost 10,000 and its not working already. I dont know if the dealer is pulling my leg but they said they do not know when the fan will come in and they had a hard time finding out what part number to order. that dose not sound very good to me. since they are the dealer they should know things like that I just took the bike home though I cant ride to long with no fan. | ||

There is a MASSIVE thread on this topic in the Big, Bad and Dirty forum: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/225002.html Fan failures seem to have been more common on Ulysses models. One guy, (a mechanical engineer) took a fan apart and thoroughly examined the parts (see photos in the thread above). He also got actual temperature data from a couple of Uly riders. His opinion is the bearing seals and the lubricant used are not right for the high temps encountered. There ARE bearings with seals and lubricants that will live happily at these temperatures. Given the number of Uly fan failures, I'd say it's pretty likely that Buell has already gotten with the fan supplier and had the bearings and lubricant upgraded to correct this problem so that the recent replacement fans should live much longer. | ||

so the fan seems to be made by Spal or at least a custom mounting with a Spal motor and fan blade. it must be the heat causing the rapid failures. | ||

It appears that heat is causing the failures of some fans due to use of bearing with seals and lubricants which aren't rated for the operating temperatures encountered. The proper bearings and lubricants are readily available and hopefully they are now using them. |
