There is a happy new bike owner in the Phoenix area this morning. I had my bike stolen last night from my condo. '05 xb12r that I picked up three weeks ago. It is black with amber wheels.

For all you badwebbers out there, please keep a look out for a suspicious amount of XB parts coming out of the Phoenix area. If anyone in Phoenix can help in any way, I would greatly appreciate it.

Not that it matters, what part Phoenix were you in? The east valley or west valley?

Update:

Phoenix Police Department recovered the bike already. I have already been to pick it up. Basically, they cut the wires on the ignition, and wired it to be on all the time. The backs of both mirrors are scraped up where it looks like it rubbed against a wall or a pole, and the airbox cover is all scratched up. Also looks like he ran over something that dented the exhaust (Buell Polished Race Muffler). Bike started right up and ran well, but I think I will take it in and have it inspected none the less.

Good News:
They caught the guy that stole it. Apparently an officer was driving down the road next to him and had the awareness to realize the guy was riding with no key in the ignition. He pulled the guy over, ran the plates, and found the report. Talk about lucky. I guess he had a girl on the back with him as well. As I was hearing this, I just couldn't help but picture some high speed chase going on. I can't believe he pulled over.

So I guess now I don't know what to do. I figure I don't want to file anything against my insurance, because it will not cost that much to fix that stuff.

Has anyone had to deal with a situation like this before? What happens now? Do I get to press charges against the guy? Is there a chance for me to recover money from this guy? Any advice would be very helpful.

bcordb3: it was in the east valley at my home.

Glad they caught him and you get your bike back without too much damage.

Don't expect to get any money out of it. Fix the thing yourself. Whether you press charges or not, he is guilty of grand theft auto. In California that's good for 3 to 5 years in state prison.

GET him. The police should ask if you want to press charges. Of course you do. Also the only way to get money from him will be in a civil lawsuit. You'll have to get an attorney OR in Phoenix you should be able to sue him in a small claims court, the max is like a thousand or so...
I'm in East Mesa myself also with a Black and Amber 05 XB12R

the least they should let you do is kick the sh-t out of him.
I'd still like a few "quality" minutes with the scum that stole my 1984 FXWG back in April of 1985.

I don't know what the laws are like now, but in my younger days, I was once busted doing donuts in dirt parking lots in AZ. In addition to the probation, I also had to pay restitution to the property owners for the damage. I would think that you should be able to get the same from this guy.

Glad to hear you got your bike back!!

I spoke to a woman who worked in an attorney's office, and she told me that I will get a chance to submit a damage report to the prosecutor and he would be responsible for restitution. The only problem is that most likely a guy who was out stealing bikes has no money to pay, and has nothing that can be taken away until he pays. Maybe he was a little rich kid and his family will pay me off.

I'm just glad I got it back as well. I did not want to have to go through the whole search process for another bike.

Too
My nephews' nearly new motocrosser was stolen from my place a year and a half ago. The people that took it ran from the cops for three months with it. They were manufacturing drugs and distributing.
We got the bike back looking as if it were a twenty year old MX'er that had been raced and wrecked every day with out even so much as a chain oiling.
He sold it for nearly scrap price and the court case looks like it will continue for years. The criminal had so much on him they dropped the veh theft charges, then he got out on his own recog. We were told he may be forced to pay restitution but the case has been postponed over and over, and we must have a representative present when it is finally heard. Meaning someone has to miss work or play to be there(4 times already). There is no justice because pressing charges doesn't mean he will pay, and it will continually cost you time and or money.
"Old fashion" justice will only cost you, because you, being an up-standing citizen have something to loose. If he has any real property the justice system will take from him, if not he will get off minimally.
If you have enough stress in your life, file the charges but don't hold your breath.

Sorry it happened...garage it...lock it..get a big dog...never get off it...

Daves, it the ignition switch just a plug and play thing? They cut the wires below the ignition. Does the whole ignition including the keys need to be replaced?

Etennuly:
yeah it sounds like there isn't much to gain when they have nothing to lose. I am not going to go on a spending spree expecting major restitution, but at the same time, I am committed to having a part in this ordeal wherever they will allow me.

Can anyone answer the question about the ignition? If the wires were cut, how much of the ignition needs to be replaced? Does the actual ignition where the key is inserted need to be replaced as well? or is it just a matter of unplugging the harness from the bottom, and plugging in a new ignition?

The ignition switch is separate from the keyed portion of the device. Two philips-head screws will disengage the actual switch from the keyed part. You will need the security-torx wrench to remove the assembly from the upper fork clamp. The ignition switch wiring harness has it's own plug tucked into a bundle behind the headlights. On an XBR model you'll need to undo your steering stem cap, pinch bolt, and both upper fork clamps in order to get it out. It's a 30 minute job.

Here you can see the entire switch assembly, item 3 in the diagram is the "security torx" bolts.

And here is a view of the switch from the front, installed in the upper clamp.

You should be able to replace the lower portion of the unit, and keep your same key.

Thank you for spending the time preparing that explanation. That is greatly appreciated. I think I will be picking up a service manual as well when I get the ignition. I know it is great to have. Used it extensively on other bikes.

Any time, glad to help. If you don't have the security torx wrench, it can be purchased from American Sport Bike for about $7.00.

No, I was stupid , and did not have them locked. I realize that I definitely made it very easy for them. I never denied that. Ultimately I was just negligent in not having a lock on the bike, and not locking the forks. Obviously I have amended both of those actions since getting the bike back.

Wouldn't it be cool if your grips on your bike were like the sword on the movie "Blade" When someone who wasn't supposed to ride it got on it and gripped the bars spikes would come out and impail him/her to the bike until the law got there? Totally Illegal but I can't stand people who steal personal property and trash it.
