Anyone know of any tips or tricks to changing the fork oil on a XB12R? According to the service manual the entire front end of the bike must be disassembled to do this job. I'm coming up on 10K and want to change the fluid out. Thanks in advance. | ||

Check the Knowledge Vault, there are several postings on fork changes. Taking the front end off is really simple, the tough part is compressing the fork springs. The major problem I faced was the fork caps were over tightened at the factory and got crushed during removal. | ||

Would anyone recommend this tool for compressing the fork springs on a Uly and a City-X? http://www.traxxion.com/store/detail.asp?product_id=FSCK $36.95 seems reasonable if it would work. | ||

By "disassemble the entire front end" do you mean dropping the forks out of the triple clamps? prop the bike up on a block of wood, remove the fender, front wheel and brake first, it's not a big deal, take you about 15 minutes to have both forks out. | ||

I just did the forks on my 12S using the tools from az_rider's post. Worked fine, except instead of two-handing it, I sat on one side and used my free hand to insert the hold down tool. The only problem I had was not reading all the way through the instructions and when I got the first side apart, I let the tube and slider almost come apart. Oil went everywhere. Gotta support the bottom. I was a little worried about damaging the seal, but it seems to be fine a week later. The tool in Pwnzor's post looks exactly like the tool the service manual calls for, If American Sport Bike had it when I bought the kit from TraxxionDynamics, I probably would have bought it from them. Kent Moore, who sells the HD tools, won't sell to civilians. Jim | ||

  Check your bushings as long as you're in there. I had teflon all over the place, it caused a leak in one of the seals and one fork was dead because of it. Click here to read all about it. |
