Hi all new to the forum have been lurking for awhile. Was recently at a Buell dealer looking at new XB's. A firebolt had a screen in the airbox cover gas cap trim piece right behind the gas cap. Is this a factory piece or aftermarket? I believe it was a new bike but I have never noticed one of these. I would like to put one on my XBs. Anyone know where to get one?

Thanks
Tim

It's factory. You have to buy the whole "tank" or rather outer airbox cover. It's an 07 change the factory made. To get the whole airbox cover (if I remember right) is around 170$. I just took the black trim completely off my cover. I like it, but I don't think most would.

Thanks for the fast reply Keys

My air box cover has been painted and I like the look. There isn't any way to get just the gas cap cover?

There isn't no. I know it's silly but it's been discussed at length when the 07s came out.

You can do the vent job yourself. Drill holes in the trim and put a mesh screen behind it. I'm not the one to ask how to do that kinda thing though. Someone on this board did a great custom job like that themselves but I am not good at the search feature.

Keys I tried searching as well and came up with nothing. Maybe someone in the aftermarket will start producing one.

I just removed the whole black plastic piece and trimmed off the mount tabs.

I guess it's not as stylish, but it is functional since I blocked off the hole
through the frame. I figure that will route a little more cool air to the rear
cylinder, and I should get plenty of air to the intake through the opening I made.

Yeah, I was glad to hear Diablo had done the same mod. I personally like the way you can see my white & round American Sport Bike filter cover (Tim: check out the open airbox conversion kit through the link) when the black trim was removed. And I also put vents in my blue plastic too so you can see the insides all around. The white American Sport Bike cover matches my white stripes on my outer blue cover. Of course I wanted to go the whole mad-max route with my mods so I like the rough look.

actually it's a change the factory made in '06 and comes standard on all '06 (and i'm assuming '07) bikes. it's a cool detail

I don't have any pics on hand, and my bike is apart right now or I'd just run down and take one.

I can take one tomorrow and post it up (if I don't forget)

and

for those of you who might not be as skilled as the one who modified the bike above. (and I'm raising my own hand here) I went and found my black trim piece now here in front of me. Like I said I took it off my airbox cover. There are 4 tabs that originally held it on. You could just make two simple cuts on the back of the trim piece and still have two tabs to hold the trim back in when reattached. That way you could still have trim around 3/4 of the gas cap and still have a sizable opening. Maybe I'll tinker with it someday. Just another option
