Yesterday I was riding with a few buddies. We were all bunched in a group of four bikes in one lane. Two up front, two in back and each pair of bikes had one slightly ahead of the other. We were all within two bike lengths of each other. We were pulled over by a Sheriff and he said that he clocked all four of us simultaneously and the two up front was clocked at 82 mph and the rear pair was at 80 mph. Is a radar able to decipher four bikes in a close pack? Aren't bikes harder to detect than cars? Do I have a chance in court? Because quite honestly, I think he made up those last three speeds. There is no way the radar could have reset that quickly to clock each bike, right?

It is my belief that laser can determine the speed of different insects in a tight formation. Be sure to pack your can of Crisco for that court date, I'm thinking.

IMPOSSIBLE.

That is, if you were truly as close together as you say you were. Radar shoots a cone that widens with distance from the gun. It is conceivable that the radar "cone" picked up one speed and reflected the group as a whole (this is the biggest reason radar is considered unreliable compared to Laser)

No matter what actually happend there is no way that all 4 bikes can get a ticket for the same reading. It seems to me that the cop clocked the first 2 bikes speed and adjusted the second 2 on a half ass guess. Fight it.

BULLSHIT......... That cop if feeding a line of crap there. It is very difficult for a laser radar gun to pin point a smaller object (motorcycle) when there are larger objects (cars) moving around in close proximity to one another. Lets say you are traveling down a road and there is a car somewhat close to you, going the same direction in the lane along the side of you. That laser gun will want to automatically pick up the larger of the two targets that are in the same area of each other. It is very hard for that laser gun to pinpoint a motorcycle with moving traffic all around it. UNLESS you are traveling on an open road alone and the cop tagged you, I'd fight it. I don't see how he could have got a read on each individual motorcycle. He may have clocked ONE of you guys at that speed and is just guessing on the others. He can't write 4 tickets on one radar clock, fight it.

You might want to read HERE, and click on the links in my post for more radar info.

i work with a cop, asked him about this
he said that itd be hard to actually clock 4 riders that close to each other, but heres the deal (and this is NC, dont know about other places) to get a radar detector in your car you have to take a special course in which they teach you how to gauge the speed without using the radar.
in NC its tough to beat one of these

dude, im sorry, but just man up and pay the ticket, you were obviously speeding, if you were on pace with one of the guys and he was doing 82 then its safe to say the cop was probably dead on with the speed you got a ticket for.
man up and take it

Ok, Garrett2 What if the lead rider sped up and and was then clocked at 82 and then immediately decelerates to blend in with us all. The last three bikes could have actually been traveling at the speed limit. Were we? That was for his radar to determine, which there is no way it could of.

If one guy speeds up to 82 and the rest of the group was doing 62, he would have had to have been out in front all by himself and easy to single out with the radar if the officer had any angle on the group.

And if the officer clocked you rolling from behind you, the other three motorcycles would have block the radar view of the one out in front.

Also, four motorcycles that close together would probably look like one target or return to the radar. The 80 and 82 readings may represent the radar seeing a change in speed. A radar can't tell the difference between four motorcycles that close and moving at the same speed and one motorcycle or one huge truck.

The best way to not get tickets is to not speed.

The second best way to not get tickets is to be polite, listen to the officer attentively, maintain eye contact and a neutral expression, and be fully cooperative. Especially if you know he has caught you air and square. That may get you off with a warning.

I'm with Garrett, if you did the crime, do the time.

Jack

Hire a lawyer and get it reduced..Easiest way to deal with it..You were obviously speeding(a lot of us do) You can't argue with the police....most of the time they win

Snackbar64 asked;

"Is a radar able to decipher four bikes in a close pack?"

No. But RADAR (in Florida) is a confirmation of an officer's visual speed estimation. If all bikes were visually observed to be going at or near the same speed, well....

"Aren't bikes harder to detect than cars?"

Yes. But it has no effect on the accurancy of speed measurement by the RADAR.

"Do I have a chance in court? Because quite honestly, I think he made up those last three speeds."

Court is where you go to contest your citation if you choose. If you present enough evidence that there was a doubt about your speed, you MAY have a chance. If you piss off the Judge, you may get the max fine, court costs and points on your driver's license (I have seen this happen).

"There is no way the radar could have reset that quickly to clock each bike, right?"

RADAR units are capable of instantly switching targets. Some RADAR units can track multiple tragets.

Hope that helps...

yep ga is the same way, they check your speed with "eye-dar" then confirm it with radar. tough to beat in court.

Hey Guys I had to chime in on this one. I'm a cop in Vicksburg, MS and we run Stalker Dual Doppler Radar systems in our cars. The Stalker has one antenna in the front and one in the rear. This system allows the officer to clock up to four targets at one time. The digital display gives two target speeds simultaneously for each antenna.

Say two cars are closing on the officer's vehicle from the front. The stalker gives the speed of both targets. It highlights the fastest target and all the officer has to do is look up to see which one is moving faster. This system works while the officer is moving or stationary. Hell this thing even talks so as to alert the officer. So two pairs of bikes could easily be seen as two cars by the radar and give the target speed and the fastest speed of the pairs.

This system runs 5,000.00 per car and is fully automated. It auto calibrates itself every 15 minutes. An officer need only know the basics of how to operate the system for legal purposes. Many departments tie their in-car camera systems into the radar. I would pay the ticket if you were speeding.
