Bought and installed an 07 airbox on my race kitted 06 XB12ss
I did the math on the area of airbox removed by the factory for this little add on.

Stock 06 XB12 Ss had approximately 3.75 square inches of holes cut out.
The 07 looks like Swiss cheese - it is the exact same shape and has approximately 25 (TWENTY FIVE) square inches removed for your enjoyment.

Oddly- when I took to drilling up my stock airbox with a 1 1/2 inch hole saw- for the heck of it after I read about the new airbox (BTW my home made modification ran great- but with some noticeable intake noise- very unscientific hole placement) which, again, after I did the math added up to an additional 7 1/2 square inches totaling 11.25 square inches total.

So where am I going here??

Good question.

The Buell boys got it right with the 07 modified airbox. They opened it up over TWENTY square inches over the 06, and it has
- no noticeable intake noise
- BREATHES and revs (OK seat of the pants) noticeably more than either the stocker of the home brew modified one.

For what it is worth

EH?

So here is my question - do you still need a re-flash if you are running the Race ECM, or can you just swap boxes.

AFAIK there is no reflash for the Race ECM - the reflash turns a stock ECM into an 07 ECM. There is no 07 specific Race ECM available.

The working assumption is that since the Race ECM was programmed to work with the Race air filter (which is advertised to flow better than the stock filter), that the Race ECM was richer in the open loop portion of the map tan the pre-07 stock ECM. However, if you are already using the Race filter (or the K&N), it is not clear that the Race ECM is rich enough to also accommodate the 07 airbox as well. The reason this all seems to work is that the Q of the intake mods is low (flow rate increases across RPM range), so the AFV feature of the Buell FI does a reasonable job of adapting to intake mods.

I'mnot familiar with the DirectLink tool, but if it can copy a map from an ECM (unlike the HD SERT tool), then someone could compare the Race ECM map with an 07 stock ECM map to see if the Race ECM s still richer.

For all of the inquiring minds... here is an 07 air box I'm shipping out this morning to a customer. There is a LOT more open surface area. We got a Black 07 12R in the other day, and you don't really notice a difference in intake noise.

BadWeb price is $31.45.

I've been selling a ton of them too. Everyone seems to be happy with the performance and intake noise level so far.
I think I'm going to try one on Kandie's 9SL.

Would this be any improvement on a stock 03 9S? I guess you need to had holes on your airbox cover inorder to see any gains.

Maybe I just dont know what Im talking about.

I have never seen an 06 or 07, but dont they just take in air right above the gas cap, and not through a scope through the frame.

Josh_cox,

Have you guys checked the AFV on Race ECM equipped bikes installing the 07 airbox? I am really interested in adding this. I think my local shop could handle a Direct Link change to the mapping, but I don't know whether it's actually required. I've heard opinions, but I haven't heard any real facts.

Maybe I'm missing the boat here but...The 07 lid has @ 20 more inches of open space? Should I choose to copy the pictures of the 07 and open er up could this help the bike run smoother? I have no complaints about the bike now(06 Ulysses) but that much more air might aid with the cooling ever so slightly. Discuss... NUTS

Ft_bstrd:
We have not, sorry. With this modification, though, you are not changing the way energy waves move like in an exhaust so that at different RPM's it changes the flow chars drastically. The fueling need change should happen in a linear fashion, therefore, an AFV change would work. That is shooting from the hip though, I may be wrong. I'll try a comparo sometime.

Nuts:
Those pics should show you how to be creative with a dremel : ). Everyone seems to love the switch so far. Scribe, and cut away!

Has any one noticed that the air box nearly blocks about a third of the intake screen on the '06, did that change with the '07?

hey this is some good info, I was thinking of cutting up my 06 air box, but if I can get an 07 lid with out any added intake noise that sweet. does anyone know if the 9 and 12s have the same air box. if not, I have a XB9 which would be better to buy a 9 or 12 style for an 07 swap?

The part number is P0215.3AA. The retail price is $34.95. I normally offer 10% off for BadWeB, but that wont save you any money after shipping. Your best off to buy it locally. Several members on Big, Bad, and Dirty have tried it with good success.

So I got mine and there was a definate difference, hard to believe, but it is very apparent. Its probably the best $35 I spent on the bike.

Silly question.. Would there be any improvement mounting one of those on a '03? One of the older bikes that still uses the scoop through the frame for air intake? For some reason, I would think it would cut down on performance on the older bikes, since it allows air to escape from the bike.. the flow not coming in from the top.

Thoughts on that one?

So has anyone got some pics of the 07 airbox lid from all angles?
I want to cut my 06 lid up to match!
