In large part it's ego preventing people from wearing the gear.

They either think that it isn't cool to wear it, it doesn't "go with their bike" or that they are too good of a rider to need it.

Those are the ones I hear after I debunk the old "it's too hot to wear that stuff" line.

I am absolutely against legislation requiring gear, we don't need our freedom eroded any farther, but I wish people would use their heads.
(for something other than a perch for a "DOT" yamulke)

over-inflated egos are NOT a substitute for airbags or proper gear.

Actually I think what explains it best is the following thought process

"It wont happen to me"

And that is a tough mindset to change until it actually does happen to someone.

Had a guy from work last night taste Dakota pickup truck last night on the way home......he is one of the no helmet no protective gear crowd. Serious road rash. Concusion.

He has said in the past...I ride a harley people will see me where they will not see you on that sport bike.

I ride like I am invisible.

I think I AM invisible! I just dont think anyone looks for ANYTHING anymore much less a bike. They pull out in front of my GIANT 3/4 ton Dodge Diesel. I try real hard to wear as much gear as I can and dont care who says what. At the end of the day I'm more likely to be in one piece, maybe those of us who walk the mall in our riding gear will inspire others to as well. KEEP IT ON!

I agree wholeheartedly on the gear department, I am now living in South Texas, and I have been wearing my Vanson lIeather jacket EVERY DAY, since I moved here in April(yeah, needs to be cleaned), and Vanson riding pants...

People ask how I can stand to be so hot, and sweat so much, was so aggrevated shooting pool on afternoon, that I took my shirt off...needless to say, the amount of scaring I have, is pretty good to convince people to wear gear...

Right now, none of my stuff has any armor in it(with 100+ temps adn all), but, the armor goes in, when I go for a ride, etc...

Believe me, I cuaght a glimpse of my mortaliity when I 17, and young enough to heal well, almost ten years later, and several crashes(most involving being stupid), my gear has saved my skin(literally), many many times over, I tyhink the worst I got, was over this previous winter, when the front of my jacket rode up, while I was sliding on the pavement, DESTROYED my gloves, with a little rash on the left hand, and a little on the right knee...

Use your gear, its worth it...and try to keep play time off public roads...that was another painfull lesson...

When people ask me, "Aren't you hot?" in the summer when they see me wearing all my gear, I just tell them the jacket has built in airconditioning, "Just like the astronauts use".

Every idiot that asks me that stupid question actually believes that ridiculous answer.

Ok, i'll save everyone the trouble of a uneasy stomach, here is the link to where i have all the pictures of this wreck, there are bike pictures, knee pictures before today, and then some that i took today http://jrkspace.spaces.live.com/ . I just got all the staples out today, and the doctor says its looking REALLY good, so im happy. I'm just pissed cause he says he doesnt want me to go to work for another week cause he doesnt want me to risk getting coolant in it. It still has some open spots that arent all the way healed up, but its getting there.

Junior heals so fast because he's a Mutant... it's one of his superhero abilities. Other powers include a superhuman ability to tear himself a new one!

Kirk, good to see you healing well.
I just hope you completely heal, take it easy now while you can. Too much too soon may seem okay right now, but when you get older, old wounds can come back to haunt you. Soreness, stiffness, arthritis, popping, and assorted other things. I wish I had listened to my doctor back when I was a kid, I'd probably be in much better shape than I am now.

that is right, i am a super human. The name is "Buell Man", lol. But i didn't say that, i must keep my secret identity a secret.

Thanks for all the support. I've come to the conclusion that if i cant sell the bike, i'm gonna ride it. BUT gear is first before that, i need a cool superhero outfit, and i REFUSE to be called a Power Ranger, those panzies have nothing on me.

I'm glad to hear that you've decided to gear up before riding. That is a very mature, and important decision to make.

I remember being your age, and it was very hard to come around to the idea that I am not 10 ft tall and bullet-proof.

We have all been there, and facing your own mortality sucks. Be glad that you have decided not to be on the losing side
of natural selection!

Before long you'll find yourself grumbling under your breath every time you see someone riding "half-naked" by your (new) standards! : )
