I have searched this topic, and the fews threads were not very helpful. I have recently seen two hondas around town that had their blinkers lit up as parking lights. I asked one guy in traffic, and he said he tried installing new blinkers and they just worked like that. They were very noticible and I would like to add some visual aid to my bike.

Does anyone have any suggestions about ow to wire the blinkers up to do this, besides buy a box to do it. I could get a relay, but I am not that savy without some directions. Anyone help me out?

First off you need dual filament bulbs, and the fixtures for them. You can probably find some after market blinkers that will fit that bill. The only difficult (although I don't see it being that difficult) would be feeding the constant power to the running light part of the dual filament.
Lockhart-Phillips has several dual filament blinker sets.
Here's a pdf (about 3megs) of the section for aftermarket blinker sets.
Page 191 starts off the blinkers with dual filaments.
I've been thinking of doing this myself, but probably won't until this winter, when I start some other projects.

if you need a constant 12v for the running light use the license plate light circuit

Nope, you can do it with the blinkers that you have, just wire them through a relay so that when you turn the blinkers on it in turn turns off the running light. You will need a separate relay for left in right if you don’t want to use diodes to separate the sides. The relay should have close to the same resistance as a light bulb so the flasher should still work at the same rate but you might also need a no load flasher so you have a normal blink-rate.

When I was at Wildwood NJ for the Bikefest, My HD buddies pointed the fact out that my front lights didnt stay on. Apparently I was fairly invisible and they thought it was dangerous so this is a mod I might consider

The absolute easiest way is to get two 1157 sockets at the auto parts store and two 1157 bulbs. Switch the 1156 sockets in the turn signal housings with the 1157 ones. Take one piece of wire, scotch lock or splice it in the middle to the tail light wire and the other ends to the low voltage terminal side of the new sockets. Hook up the original turn signal and ground wires and your turn signals well be additional tail lights as well.
It's the first mod I do.

A couple of questions about this: My 1983 Honda Ascot has front running lights from the factory (dual filament bulbs and sockets). Was this a DOT requirement at one time that was since rescinded, or was Honda just providing something extra?

Anyone know if many (any?) current bikes have this feature?

be careful, i believe in most states it is illegal to have amber running lights in the rear, they must be red.(something like that) need to double check that but that is what i remember from my Honda Shadow days.

Sleez- good point, but thats an easy fix to. you can just remove the amber inner cover and either use red bulbs or get red spray tint (model car paint) and tint the outer lense

Honda was providing something extra. In fact, I think ONLY Honda used the front turn signals as running lights. I know my Yamahas didn't (except for my 1993 Venture Royale). I don't know why nobody else picked up on this idea but it is a very popular modification for BMW owners (hence the existence of the Run-N-Lites company).
