I just picked up my xb12r from dealer. They did the 10k service. I was under the impression, acording to service manual that they would be changing fork oil. They said they did'nt and that the factory changed it to 20,000.
Any information on this,anyone?
Thank You!

Uhhhh....we change it and the plugs at 10,000. it cost 368 for a 10k, and the plugs and the fork oil are the reasons. its a 1.7 hour job just to do the plugs, cause you have to take all of the air box off.

I take it your a harley dealer,,, i think to take the airbox off is about 5min, to gather wrenches about 2, take a pee 2, drink a cold one about 5, remove both plugs and put them back in about 10, put airbox back on about 5 hmmm drink anohter one while i realize why dealerships f&*k you... hmm total about 25-30 min witout all the bs about 15 min... geese nothing like doing the work yourself as you realize how much ur a%s feel after walking outa the dealership.

My 2003 XB9 service schedule says to change the fork oil and the plugs every 10,000 miles. I don't know what the newer manuals say...

The harley service cheat sheets i see at the shop say 10k as well, the older ones any way. i think after 04 there were some changes because our techs are saying 20k for fork oil on all the newer models. i plan to tell them to do mine at 10 whether they need it or not.

The fork oil makes a world of difference. I changed mine at 10k, God only knows what was in there from new. The old stuff didn't look too bad but with fresh oil it's like having a new front end. Compliant over small bumps, no dive under braking and it doesn't feel as though the front tyre is working so hard.

My xb9s just got its 10k servicing and the new 7.9 hour charge is worth a different thread. But the fork oil got changed and the steering head bearings were tightened.

Front end is definitely more solid again.

They are saying that b/c on H-D models, the normal interval is 20,000 miles. I think this year they changed it to 50,000 miles though.

So, they are trying to apply H-D suspension wisdom to a completely different set up. Your interval IS 10,000 mile. Take it back and ask them to perform the rest of the service they charged you for. Don't be angry, just let them know you are right. Ask them to check the service manual if they want.

Just so you guys know, in reference to the high price of dealer service, your mostly paying for the thousands of hours of training that the dealer has to pay for. I cant say I know very much about Harley/Buell dealers, But Ive worked in automotive dealerships for years. The labor hours are flat rate, It doesnt really matter how long it takes the tech, thats just simply how much it pays. Being a flat rate tech I know how it is. You get screwed on a lot of jobs, like warranty work, and you make it up on the cash work. It sucks, but I thats just how it is, and its not the dealer who makes up those times, most of it is based on what the company tells them to charge. You will have your occasional dealer who is way off on flat rate times, but for the most part theyre just charging you what any other buell dealer would charge you.

My theory is that we Buellers don't spend enough money at the HD/Buell dealerships. You know, chrome, leather, genuine accessories. We are not earning our keep at the shops.

So we get stuck with higher bills on our "high-tech Harleys", so to speak.

service schedule says it's part of the service. if you pay for the scheduled service, it gets done...anything else is illegal, and actionable.

might be an idea for Buell to list the billable times for services in the owners manuals, too - that'd put the kibosh on a lot of this BS. ( I know you used to be able look it up for cars - is there a current public listing for bikes?)

There is not a common listing for bikes. H-D and Buell do post a "warranty time" for certain procedures. As you all know warranty time is usually less than what normal customers pay. Most charges are based on warranty time though.

Buell, however does post service times and does allow a reasonable amount of time to perform them.

FWIW: my local dealer quoted $160 book time for a fork oil change on an XB9R.

I worried aloud to my indie about the expense of the tool for changing fork oil and he said it's a shop policy to buy special tools as needed and not worry about the cost.

it takes about 5 hrs to do a 10 k. and you dont have to take the air box off to change spark plugs. i can change them in about 15 to 20 min.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.I may try dealing with the dealer on this. Not sure if they'll give in plus now what a inconvince it'll be. Have check manuel and see if perhaps i'm up to job.
On a second note they told me that the 20k was a big one around 600.00 that they service the fork then and the swingarm comes off. I did'nt see anything on the swingarm in the service schedule. Any feedback welcome.
Thank!
