Just changed my tranny fluids and prior to replacing the inspection cover, I noticed the clutch lever had no spring tension. When I move the clutch lever back and forth, I can see the clutch cable moving the clutch, just no spring tension. Any ideas what I did wrong? JT | ||

Didn't touch the cable adjust. I did Pull the clutch lever when the fluids were drained with the inspection cover not on the primary. | ||

That shouldn't have done anything. Can you adjust the cable to get the tension back? Did you turn the clutch adjustment screw in the center of the clutch hub? | ||

The only thing providing tension on the clutch lever is the diaphragm spring in the clutch itself. This is the big plate spring that you are supposed to fill the oil up to. There is no way to accidentally remove it - you need special tool to even get it out. The only thing that would do what you are talking about is if the nut in the center of the clutch actuator was loosened to the point of not disengaging the clutch (you would see the actuator rotate, but it won't compress the clutch spring to release it). | ||

I can adjust the clutch cable, however, when all the slack is taken up the clutch squeeze is not the same. It's more difficult and won't completely engage. I do have the manual and it worth sh*t for this problem. I didn't turn the screw in the center of the clutch hub and it appears to be showing about a 1/3" of threads. Sounds like I need to tighten the screw in the center of the actuator? Does this sound like the right thing to do? By the way, thanks for all the help. JT | ||

Take a look at the clutch section of the manual It should have the steps for adjusting the clutch. Just start at square one and set it. | ||

Dave, I thought you meant the buell owners manual, obviously you are talking about a different manual. | ||

yes, the service manual. That is what you are probably going to need to figure it out. If you have any friends with Buells or Sportsters that may have a manual the adjustment procedure should be the same. | ||

Just went and turned a few screws and discovered that it was the the nut in the center of the clutch actuator was loosened to the point of not disengaging the clutch. Thanks for the help! JT | ||

Check this thread from the other day, in the KV. I described the process there.
