I'm trying to decide if I want to bother w/ the race ecm or not on my 03 xb9r. The bike is running fine right now w/ the stock ecm, Jardine pipe, 12 airbox, de-snorkled, and K&N filter. It doesn’t even pop on decel (but I’ve only ridden it around the neighborhood up to 45mph). The only issue is the check engine light stays on. It’s got over 20k on it and I doubt it has ever had a tps reset.

I’m also starting to get worried because the fan has never turned on, but I’ve only ridden it twice for less than a mile each time. I know the fan runs less often when the bike is broken in, but probably not that infrequently. The check engine light may be on because the fan is busted? How do I test the fan w/out hooking the bike up to a computer. It’s kind of funny how many threads there are about how much people hate the noise from their fans, but I’m worried because mine isn’t making the noise!

The check engine light may be on because the fan is busted?
It will throw a code if the fan goes out.
You can jump the access to the ECM and count the flashes on you dash to determine why the light is on. It's in the service manual on how to do this, and the codes also. Do you have a service manual?

Yes I have the service manual. So the number of flashes correspond to an error code and the manual will tell you what it means? Cool.

The Race ECM is part of the equation for more power.
A less restrictive exhaust allows for more air flow.
More air flow needs more fuel in the mix.
If you don't add more fuel to the mix, the bike will run lean.
Lean = Heat
Heat will rob power, and may cost some of the bike's longevity.
You can't get more power from air flow alone, add some fuel to the mix.
