I had a strange and potentially dangerous situation occur on a ride last week into Vermont.
The head of the bolt from the front muffler mount broke off while riding. The remaining part of the bolt (with nut attached) then proceeded to work it's way through the mount eventually puncturing the oil filter. Oil was streaming out and literally soaked everything aft of the filter. I had no indication that anything was amiss and, had it not been for my riding partner, I would have been flat on my butt at the first corner.
We were able to obtain a filter at a HD dealer, replace the bolt and oil and continue our trip but I was spooked for the rest of the ride. Couldn't stop checking the back tire.
I've since replaced the bolt with a grade 12 high tensile one but I'm now a little leary of the stock oil filter given how thin the skin is. It wouldn't take much of a stone to come off the tire and penetrate the thing.
Anyway I post this for your information. You may want to periodically check that bolt.

Jon, I can see why you would be concerned about a repeat incident but...the oil filter is hidden from stones by the chin fairng...no?

There's some protection there but it seems my karma that a stray stone will find the filter just as I'm about to heal into a fast bend. We have a Scotts billet filter on order......

Jon thats scary! This sounds ghetto but it just came to me that if you found some dark colored duct tape you could wrap the filter and prevent the small stone issue from happening. The stone could dent the filter with the tape on but it would be unable to puncture it. Kind of a lame fix but could ease your mind. Be safe!
