I'm having trouble keeping my 12r running. it'll start just fine, but after about 5 seconds of nice steady idle, the rpm's start to oscillate and it dies. I reset the ecm, nothing. I put in new spark plugs and wires (needed the wires), nothing. played with the idle, it'll run if I set the idle to 2k, drop it below 1400, dies...

this all started after I lost the ground to my TFI. had to fight with her to get home, but I made it. Fixed the grounding problem, but now I can't keep her going.

Ideas?

Check charging system... my charging system died last week. It would start (if battery was charged) and would run only if kept above idle.

RPM's wouldn't stay stable, if I tried to hold it at 3k it would vary by up to 500 rpms randomly.

She didn't run well either, obviously... would accelerate fine for a second, then cut out, then back to normal.

This might not be your problem, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to break out the service manual and check to make sure.

Best of Luck

Ok, i've done some more investigating and here are the symptoms.

idle surge whether warmed up or cold. more so when the bike is cold.

I just took the TFI off (race ecm only now) and the bike will hesitate bad at 4k rpms

After I punch it and come off the throttle, the engine will idle at 2k rpms ( clutch in)

I have a lot more deccel popping now

No check engine light or anything...

HELP, PLEASE!

Been doing some reading and was curious what a stator was, what it does, and what happens when it goes out.

Voltage goes to no more than 12V (battery voltage) and maybe significantly less. Also the system will not maintain 14.3V and the battery will not charge.

So....it's the meat and 'taters of the alternator?

Yes, the stator is the stationary part of generator, the thing with a bunch of copper windings on it that fails and needs replaced if you run it in GL-5 gear oil too long. When it fails, your charging system no longer works and your battery will soon be dead.

Correct - just got my bike back last night from the dealer from getting the Regulator/Stator/Battery replaced under warranty.

Good side- I no longer need to change the primary fluid.

OK, so if my stator IS bad...how long do I have before my battery runs out. Because I've ridden her for 15+ miles...

When my stator died I was riding to work. Started it up and 16-17 miles later it died. When the engine light comes on you have 30 seconds to 5 minutes to find a good place to pull over. American Sportbike has a volt gauge I am going to install before I ride mine again.

Well, I don't think it's the stator. I've ridden it for awhile and haven't seen any sign of a weak battery. The symptoms are pretty consistent.

Curious...will the bike run with the ECM unplugged or broken in anyway?

no, your bike will not run without the ecm.
Have you adjusted the idle correctly?
Have you reset your TPS?
Check battery terminal connections?

Not sure, but will these run like my GSX-R trackbike by just charging the battery every night? It will run for a good 2-3 hours on one charge and is usually good for a whole trackday.
